Good morning all!
I have been testing my waking up level for the past 17 days since I got my kit. I started off at 8.4 and am now at 6.9. I’m not sure if by now I should be lower so am going to start keeping a detailed food diary for a while. My question is this - in the evenings I do get a bit peckish and hate going to bed with a rumbly tummy! I discovered Tuc crackers are quite low in carbs so have been having four of those with a couple of small slices of cheese. Is it possible the crackers are influencing my level some ten hours hence? I would have thought, logically, that this would be unlikely but then nothing about diabetes is straight forward is it?!! Thanks.

Could well be, but possibly not in the way you think!

A lot of people find their morning reading is the last to come down, because the liver prepares for the day ahead by dumping a load of Glucose into the system, from about 4am onwards. It's sometimes known as the Dawn Phenomenon, or Dawn Effect.
Sometimes a small snack before bed, particularly if it contains protein or fat (to slow digestion) can actually help lower the morning levels, by switching off the liver's desire to churn out glucose.

That’s really interesting. Had no idea. So it sounds, to my untrained brain, that the levels I’m getting first thing are not that bad. When I had my first blood test on first being diagnosed the level was 10.4 mmol so if that’s comparable then that’s not too bad. I think!
Thank you for the explanation and I’ll stick to the tuc and cheese!

I want a Tuc biscuit & cheese now.

Go for it! But don’t blame me if it spikes!
Further to this, my reading this morning was 7.1, had two slices of Hovis low carb seeded bread toasted for brekkie and tested two hours later - 11.4! Wow! That was a surprise, and I though I was being very good. Only had Bertolli Marge on it as well and my usual cup of tea with sweeteners.

What was it at lunchtime?

6.0 then I had a ham salad with coleslaw and cheese and it was 6.7 two hours later.
