Relationship to Diabetes
Hi all, I was an insulin dependant gestational diabetic three years ago and the diabetic symptoms have returned quite severely this past month. I'm feeling thirsty, urinating almost hourly and am having raised fasting sugar between 6-7 mmol/l most mornings. After meals I am very tired. As a rule I minimise my carb intake to around 200 per day so I'm starting to worry a bit. My doctor won't undertake a ogtt as my hba1c came back at 38mmol/l. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance, Jen

Hi Jen, can you check your blood sugars 2 hours after a meal and see what's going on?

What Sue said - then when you find out it's really high, as both she and I very strongly suspect - in fact I'd put money on it if this was an online betting site, and I don't do that ! - grit your teeth, make another appointment to go back to see your GP and test before and after as many meals as you eat between now and then - and take your results to show him!

Hba1c is an average for the last 3 months so a recent alteration might now have had chance to show itself.
If you get high readings to show your doctor then reducing carbs might help to minimise the tiredness after meals as you wait for an appointment, though you really should not have to wait, but that would be in an ideal world.
