Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi

I'm new to this site and hoping u can help me. I was diagnosed as diabetic in June 2012 44 fit and slim told type 2 and i should be able to control this by diet. I was v good about what i ate but ended up in hospital with bs 17 and 4 plus keytones in july they thought maybe I was type one but I have no gad antibodies. I am on metformin 1500 a day and that is working but I am still so tired and I'm still loosing weight - thing is can't really afford to loose more. I am desparate for some advice - can't find any slim type 2 that are similar age. I'm trying to get back to my life but just don't have energy - please help me I'm exercising and eating really well - from what I've read now bs low I should be feeling much better

Hi Jo, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. You say the metformin is working now - what sort of levels are you testing at, and are you testing before and after meals?

We do have Type 2s who don't fit the stereotype of overweight and inactive, and we have also had a number of people who are slow-onset Type 1 (also called Type 1.5) but diagnosed Type 2 because of their age. Your trip to the hospital would suggest an insulin deficiency so I am surprised you weren't started on insulin straight away - we also have members diagnosed Type 2 fitting your physique who have been on insulin since diagnosis.

Fasting before breakfast between 6.5 - 8. 2 hours after food between 5.8 - 8 mostly early 7. I'm test 5 times a day at the mo as don't want to end up in hospital. I'm not eating that differently but def less carbs at evening meal now. I'm just so tired still - does my no gad antibodies mean I'm type 2 - sorry for bombarding u questions - just feeling desperate for answers - thanks so much for quick reply

I know someone (a Moderator on another diabetic forum) and she was always thin, her whole life. She's also tall and hence her nick at school was 'Lanky' LOL

She was much the same age as you when DX (she was having lady probs, went in for a pre-op assessment, nurse does her routine fingerprick BG and asks 'How long have you been diabetic then? It's not on your notes ....' LOL

Sorted the BG out and never needed the op .....

Anyway - once you can get your BG sorted out - for a while - you should be fine.

Those are good numbers. Have you had a C-Peptide test? This shows how much 'native' insulin your pancreas is producing.

My levels have been 5 - 8 for about 6 weeks now - typically how long does it take to feel back to full energy - thanks so much for your advice - I need it badly at moment

I have had so many tests - I know that I had that one but no one has said that this is the resu,t however I was told that my insulin was in normal range but on the low side - could that be the result ??? Any advice on what that means

Hi - how about any other tests which may explain your tiredness and weightloss ? may not be purely down to the D.

I've had my thyroid tested and my tsh came back at 0.59 which I was told was in the normal range

AFAIK 0.59 on the TSH scale is overactive thyroid which could explain your weight loss and fatigue. I say this because I am on thyroid meds for an underactive thyroid and I run well at just under 1. However the Endo monitors this carefully to ensure I drop no lower. Weight loss is usually a sign of over active thyroid... but who knows, we are not medically trained. It would be worth asking for a test for T3 and T4 rather than TSH (which is only the thyroid stimulation test rather than your actual thyroid output), but these tests are hard to get unless you are under a specialist.

The doctor has said that it would have to be .3 to overactive even though I have read it is best to be at 1 - i will see if i can get further t3 and t4 test thanks

Hi 123j123, I was diagnosed at 43 years and went from 13stone to 8 1/2 stone in 6 months basically through diet and exercise and am still losing weight..however, I've cut back on the exercise and replaced it with Tai Chi and looking for a yoga class to de-stress. Are you eating enough calories to counter balance your exercise?
