Hi - I’m Phil.
I’m looking for some advice.
I need to add some backstory to put the issue into context. I’ll try to be brief.
I’m 54yrs old. Was obese most of my life until I had a gastric bypass in 2011. I am now just into the overweight category.
I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic prior to bypass but this was put into remission following the bypass.
I lost lots of weight and became much healthier. But about 3 years ago I started to lose strength in my legs and my shoulders became stiff. I’ve suffered muscle atrophy and weakness particularly on my LHS. I’ve had a wide variety of tests and procedures under the care of neurology - MRI x 2, nerve conduction tests, dozens of blood tests and recently a muscle biopsy. The biopsy showed very mild myopathy in my leg muscles. Neurologist is now stating that there is nothing more can be done - that the weakness is down to gastric bypass and weight loss. He previously stated that it was chronic vitamin deficiency, but my bloods came back spot on with no deficiencies.
In the last 18 months I have also had an issue with reactive hypoglycaemia - I used a libre CGM to get control of it but then saw an endocrinologist who prescribed Acarbose which has worked brilliantly and given my diet some normality after having to eat ‘keto’ for months. I also have been having issues with a low heartbeat which does not seem to be getting worse but affects my energy levels.
Phew - that’s it….lots wrong, but no idea what is causing it. For a long time I thought I had muscular dystrophy but the neurologists are now saying there is nothing neurologically wrong.
What I wanted to ask this forum is - are there others out there who have similar symptoms as a side effect of diabetes?
I’ve done a similar thing on gastric bypass forums and have not yet come across anyone who has this condition so I’m thinking that it is more to do with glucose than the bypass.
Does anyone out there recognise any of this story??
Thanks for any help you can give.
Phil
