Had a phone consult yesterday with the Practice nurse, asking how I was doing. Told her that I seem ok, have lost 5 lb in weight, and had managed to get my blood reading down to about 11. (but can't seem to get it any lower) She has suggested going on Insulin, but I'm reluctant, as it seems to me that once I go down that path, there's no going back. Anyone got any ideas ?
You've only just started to address your weight, and are already losing. Why not ask for a review in 3 months when hopefully you will have lost a lot more weight with SW, rather than go onto insulin. I lost weight with SW but found its emphasis on lots of carbs and fruit just did not suit me once diagnosed. I now count carbs and calories with an online website - and it's cheaper than SW! I see you are not a veggie fan, but perhaps your wife can include it in your diet by blitzing it down and "hiding" it is sauces and soups. That's what they advise parents to do with fussy kids. I have swapped carrot and swede puree for potatoes and I honestly don't miss potatoes. Also instead of rice I have "cauliflower rice". Like rice it's tasteless and just sucks up the juices. I allow the odd slice of Hovis Lower Carb bread, but others will point you in the direction of suitable breads. Also I swapped noodles for "Bare Naked protein noodles", and have with a meat sauce with loads of hidden veggies. To get my fibre up I take Inulin, once a day in half a pint of water. I used to take Fybogel, but it's higher in carbs and sugars. But good luck with taking charge of your health.
Hello again @holbeckjubilee
As @everydayupsanddowns suggested it might be good if you can to do more frequent testing of the effect of the foods you are eating, to see how these are effecting your blood sugars
There is some info information on how to do this on https://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/test-review-adjust.html
Finding the right solution to blood sugar control and weight loss is a very individual thing and you need to find what is right for you.
Personally I found that by sorting out my blood sugar levels, and for me this was by eating less carbs, that the weight loss followed along side this.
Hello . I would like to reassure you that with T2 , going on insulin doesn’t necessarily mean their is no going back. It may be possible to go on it for a while then as you lose weight and your dietary changes take effect you van come off it , you may or may not need other diabetes meds afterwards.
Having said that I do understand why you are reluctant, I just wanted to let you know that it may not be permanent.
I was on insulin for about 7 weeks and with my meter in control and watching the carbs my consultant was happy to stop it. So it's not a one way ticket at least. But I'd definitely recommend getting a meter and watching carbohydrate content of whatever food you eat. You'll very likely get your BG levels down.
I think the bigger issue is diets where they don't highlight the impact of carbohydrate on BG levels. If you've been recommended doing one of them, I highly recommend seeking out alternatives.
