Would really appreciate some advice.
Ok, been unusually thirsty, weeing alot (getting up through the night), very tired, dizzy spells, generally groggy. My partner is type 2 diabetic, so I checked my levels on his machine and had readings of between 14.1 and 18.2 over a 2 week period, various times. Went to docs, they did blood tests. Came back Hbac1 level 31 mmol, which I assume is fine as heard nothing from them.
Symptoms still the same, readings still the same, did ketosis test stip which came back 'positive ketosis'. Any advice really appreciated.

Try his machine first thing in the morning when you wake before you get out of bed. That will give you a more accurate figure.

Have done, used it various times. Some days first thing as soon as i have got up, some days later in day. Lowest reading I had was 14.1 and highest 18.2.

Hba1c gives a rolling three month figure. So you could be running high levels but not indicating on that test.

What sort of things do you usually eat and drink?

Do you exercise?

Just normal diet really, nothing changed, to be honest am not a particularly big eater, not usually that hungry lol. Just generally drink water really, apart from brew in a morning. Average exercise. Nothing out of the ordinary .

Are you sure your hands aren’t ‘contaminated’ @mia100 ? I remember there was an article about some liquid soaps messing with results, and, of course, any food residues will too. I also think I was told that newsprint could as well.

Another thing to look at is the accuracy of the meter. Some are more accurate than others.

Seems to be accurate, just all very strange. My partner just done his reading, as I say he is controlled type 2, he got reading of 6.
But I just followed exactly same procedure...and got 17???

Could your HbA1c have been 131 instead of 31 as that would tie in with the finger prick readings you are getting. I would be concerned that there has been some mistake with so many finger prick readings being high and you having symptoms. Ask for a second HbA1c if you are sure the first one has come back at 31 because that doesn't tie in with how you are feeling and mistakes can happen either the sample mislabeled or some other mix up at the lab.
What level of ketones are you seeing?

Not sure it just said 31 on the result?
The ketones results was one of those 'wee strip' dip things....and it was past the darkest colour on the chart

Hmm, I’d ask for a repeat HbA1C and also a blood glucose test (this will be like the fingerpricks you’re doing but from a vein).

What did the doctor/nurse say about the ketones? If you’re not a big eater, then maybe they’re ‘starvation ketones’ but I’d want some repeat tests.

Nothing was said about ketones, I just did home test today to check that. I mean I don't starve myself ...I have lunch and my dinner, but I am not a snacker lol. Just don't want to keep bothering them if you know what I mean, just wondered if there could be a simple explanation

The three possible non-diabetes are faulty testing technique; contaminated hands; faulty meter. It seems like you’ve ruled out the last one, so look at the other two and rule them out. Also test your blood sugar at a variety of times, eg first thing in the morning before getting out of bed and before eating, two hours after eating a carby meal, etc etc.

If you have ketone test sticks, then do a few more tests through the day, eg after eating, and see what you get. An HbA1C of 31 is a long way from diabetes.

Thank you for all you help and advice really appreciate it. All very odd. It's only the only symptoms that I had was why I checked it in the first place, particularly 'weeing' about a hundred times a day , particularly having to get up numerous times in night (which I have never ever done).
Will certainly try the recommendations. Thank you.

Your HbA1c does not match how you are feeling and the finger prick tests that you are doing.
With ketones in the darkest range for a pee test, along with the symptoms that you are describing, it feels like a higher HbA1c would be expected. I would definitely ask for a retest, and your Ketone level is worrying me. I would want to get things checked. An HbA1c of 131 would make more sense, especially with the finger prick results you are getting.
Let us know how you get on.

Sorry to hear about your confusing results @mia100

Do bear in mind if you are already testing positive for ketones that depending on how they are being created, you do need to keep a close eye on them.

Particularly with the symptoms you have been experiencing. If you start to experience breathlessness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or a “pear drop” or “nail varnish remover” smell on your breath you should go to A&E for urgent attention
