ADVERTS asking people to call 999 only when it is an emergency will be displayed on the side of ambulances from next week.

Asking paramedics to change the battery in their television remote or for help to resuscitate a pigeon have been among inappropriate or hoax calls received by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

The trust said these "unnecessary calls" were putting "extra pressure" on their staff ? who must reach 75% of all life-threatening calls over the year within eight minutes.

As a result, EMAS is now planning to adorn its ambulances with adverts looking at the "right use" of 999. It will also be putting up posters in public places across the region.
