IT'S not every day of the week, let alone on your birthday, that you meet former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (pictured) and have a couple of private moments with him.

We met at the European Diabetes Leadership Forum in Copenhagen where he was giving the key note speech.

I was one of a few participants invited to meet him in person, and was able to tell him about the growing group of parliamentarians from around the world who are now communicating on a regular basis to swap ideas and initiatives to push the diabetes agenda forward.

Another speaker at the forum was the Prime Minister of Denmark, who happens to be the daughter-in-law of Neil and Glynis Kinnock.

She echoed the calls of many at the event for the condition to be taken more seriously, not least because of its impact on health care budgets.

This theme was taken up by Kofi Annan in relation to the growing impact of diabetes on developing countries and the world economy.

Arranged for medical practitioners, patient groups, researchers, policy makers, and others with an interest in this chronic condition, the forum agreed a 'road map' to follow covering three priority areas; prevention, early diagnosis and intervention, and better management and control.

In comparison to most other countries the UK is a leader across all three, but there are other countries who can claim to do better than us in each one.
