There is a DAFNE course provided by the Open University and they are usually very good at supporting those with disabilities including sight so it may be worth contacting them to see what they can offer.

Have you asked your course provider to email you the material so you can zoom in?

The DAFNE Course books can be viewed online if they can give you access to it - the Zoom feature is in the bottom right corner:

They can email or large print the course notes to you at in person courses too, or you could bring a magnifier etc, when you register you provide your access needs

How are you accessing this forum? If you can write on this forum you can read an email. You used an email address to sign up. If someone helps you write these posts they can help you open the email with the course notes.

My provider has done that and DAFNE refuses to make any adjustments for me. I'm trying to get this done quickly as the other way is the legal route. This would hold up my treatment for years its already been a year .

While not an in-person course BERTIE is freely available online (so could be accessed much like this forum) and covers much of the same material as DAFNE.

It’s available here: www.bertieonline.org.uk

Perhaps your clinic would be happy if you were to complete that?

There is no binding requirement for people to have graduated from any one course, or even have attended a structured education course at all, in order to qualify for pump therapy. Your clinic/Consultant can simply assess that you have the skills needed to operate an insulin pump safely and effectively.

I can’t see your clinic would have a leg to stand on if you have worked through an equivalent course, and the face-to-face course cannot be made accessible to you?

My NHS trust are mandating the DAFNE course as NICE are recommend that ever type 1 Diabetic takes a form of this course. Personally I'm starting to think its a way of rationing health care. There is another thing next time I pass out due to low blood sugar I go to hospital and refuse to leave until they put a pump in place.(as I'm seeing those green jump suited ladies n gents quite alot )

Prof Partha Kar (NHS England diabetes co-lead) used to get very cross about this kind of gatekeeping, and had offered to intervene on patients’ behalf.

NICE say that best practice is that courses are offered. And there is nothing in NICE guidance for access to insulin pump therapy that requires a DAFNE (or equivalent) course to be completed. It’s just not in the guidance. They only mention that education should be provided which is appropriate to people on insulin pumps. DAFNE isn’t even pump specific.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 at age 6 in the summer of 2012, was on injections for the grand total of 8 days and has been on pumps ever since. She has never done a DAFNE or similar course, because they don’t do them for children. We had all our training done by the pump rep and DSN, plus about half an hour with a dietician to make sure we know what foods contain carbohydrate. Then we were left to get on with it, although because she was so newly diagnosed as well they were checking in with us every few days at first. There is absolutely NO requirement to do such a course to get a pump; some hospitals are way more clued up on pumps than others though. Ours would get every single type 1 on HCL if they could (money being the only thing stopping them). Maybe your team don’t feel confident to do the training themselves and that’s why they are insisting on a course? Or maybe it is just money, if DAFNE won’t tell you how to use a pump

Since diabetes is a condition that can affect people's eyesight then it is ridiculous not to provide suitable material to support the DAFNE course to make it accessible.
Disability discrimination comes to mind.

Well - that is exactly what @Mr T is inferring since he already knows what he's being told contravenes the Disability Rights legislation. Have you, Mr T, informed whoever is telling you these things that unless they assist you properly, that you will have to investigate what legal steps you can take?

Just do the Dafne course then, and ask them to read all the material out loud during the sessions. They did that anyway on my course and the majority of the benefit is from listening and discussing, we didn’t do any sitting reading a book
