Hi

I have Reactive Hypoglycemia and Type 2 Diabetes. Have been to see the diabetic dietitian this morning and she asked me if i'd tried Acarbose. Apparently like the GI diet it slows things down - and this drug slows things down even more! I also need to loose weight but am struggling so much - not lost anything in about 6 months but still managed to keep just under one and a half stones off. I had lost almost 2 stone but now struggling with hypos :(

For the hypos now she doesnt want me to eat food but to have glucose tablets - how long does it take anyone else to feel ok again after a hypo taking these glucose tabs? I find it take ages and I start panicking.

I get very scared when I have a hypo especially when I am on my own as I blacked out once.

Views would be appreciated.

Hi

You sound almost similar to me!

I have tried Acarbose but I am afraid if I had stayed on it - it may have ruined my marriage if I had!:D

I was warned about the 'wind' effect but Acarbose was 10 fold the effect of Metformin and it was not the sort you could hide! 🙄 (say no more!)If I could choose between the two I would opt for Metformin.

Have you tried Metformin.

I would say though that everyone is affected differently, so dont let it stop you trying.

I am about to start on Byetta but only on private prescription - and that has took me a year! I will report back how I get on with it.

I find if I eat a cereal bar whilst exercising it does help - but for me if the hypo is going to happen it will at some stage -It might be worth trying a bar half way through your exercise though.

Good luck with it, I know how awful hypos are. Do you have test strips and if so how low do you go? I go into the high 2's.

If you haven't got strips you will need them as you need to be over 5 to drive.🙂
