Been today after being diagnosed 4 weeks ago and cutting out all the bad processed foods it was 7.4 four weeks ago... and devastated today thinking it would be less and it is 11.4...I cannot tell you how upset I am..what else can i do ?,, I told her i cannot walk and the tingling in my legs...so have another appointment on friday with her to check my feet..why she could not do it today is beyond me...I am so upset as now i have the thing i worked hard for 4 weeks not to have is 500g metaformin ( i think thats how to spell it not sure )...i cant stop crying... what else can i do ??? i was so strict with myself but as i am on only ?105. per week to pay all my bills and buy food and keep myself..you cannot have fresh fresh fresh all the time...

First of all, needing medication is not a disaster - and it's not always permanent, as several people have been able to give up after a while. One point is to ensure you apply for a medical exemption card, so that you don't have to pay for prescriptions.

What units / measures are your figures of 7.4 and 11.4? HbA1c? Blood glucose? What foods have you cut out / cut down on? It's not necessarily processed foods in general that will affect your blood glucose levels - carbohydrate is more likely to be the ket factor. Frozen and tinned fruit and veg is just as good as fresh - as long as the tins don't contain sweetened syrup.

I quite agree, a two for one appointment would have been better. Howver, it might be better to have more time to discuss options for treating your pins and needles symptoms on Friday.

Hang in there rossie, it will all sort it's self out. I too found it hard when I was first diagnosed and cut down and out onfoods which seem to be all the ones I loved but with a bit of adjustment here and there you will find your own levels. It can be so frustrating and want to give you a bout of the screaming abb dabs but you aren't alone as remember we are all rooting for you.

she didnt say anything except i want to test you glucose..oh its 11.4 you need tablets...see you friday for your feet...no idea what units/measures..etc...i was crying and she said read the leaflet i gave you ( which says nothing except eat freh foods ).i dont know what agrees with me and what doesnt....I have cut out cake, sugar, sweets, crisps, juice, coffee, biscuits, bread except burgens soya and linseed which NORTHENER recommended. jacket potatoes, fried foods, squash, ....Last week i weghed 20 stone 12 pounds..this week 21 stone 3 1/2 pounds..I just dont get it..!!! my sister said you must be eating between meals but i am not..!!!

Sorry to hear your results weren't what you expected but hang in there. I've seen many people say on here "Diabetes is a maraton not a sprint" it takes time to get everything right. Medication might not be what you wanted but it can help enormously when the dosage is right.

Try and be positive, I know it's hard right now but it will get better.

If she tested your blood there and then it must have been your Blood Glucose that was tested and yes 11.4 is high but you sound like you would have been very stressed about going to see the nurse and stress can cause your liver to release glucose which would send you higher.

Have you had blood taken for lab analysis for the HbA1C test?

yes it was 11.4 then when i went to get results and she told me i had to have a fasting one..that one was 7.4 so i thought if i cut out all the sugary items and processed tinned foods it will be lower than 7.4 and i would be able to monotor with healthy eating so hence i was upset after 4 weeks to find it was up.I also take blood pressure tablets and I have ramsey hunt so i take medication pregabalin for that. so i am wondering if tablets might cause it to be high ? perhaps..?

Was today's result of 11.4 also fasting? If not you're not comparing apples with apples!

I don't know about the other drugs you're taking sorry, maybe someone with more experience will know some more.

Hi Rosie

I really feel sorry for you, I was diagnosed a few months ago and at first was feeling very similar to you I think...scared, angry, helpless etc - I found this site really helps you to realise that you are not alone in feeling like that. It also help you when you need answers about diabetes 'stuff' that is difficult or too frightening to find else where!

I have calmed down a bit now and am slowly getting my levels under control, thanks to Metformin excersize and diet. It is also starting to make me feel better, so there are good things to come, it just takes some time to understand what works well for you.

Good luck & remember you are not alone! 😱

You really mustn't beat yourself up then trying to comapre a fasting result with one an hour after food when you're probably at your peak (obviously will depend on what you ate an hour before!) and when you're stressed!!

She really should have explained that to you, leaving you thinking you've got worse is pretty poor, your fasting test today might have been better!!

Do you have ability to test yourself?

Sorry to hear what you've been going through Rossie.

The timing of this test is crucial. As Robofski says - if one test was fasting and this one was an hour after eating (the point at which many T2s will see their very highest readings) then the two tests cannot be compared 'like for like'.

What had you eaten before the test?

It is heartbreaking to see someone trying so hard to look after themselves not being given thorough information and explanation. Living with diabetes is a long term project - you don't have to fix it *right now*. You can take your time, work slowly and steadily towards your goals. As Copepod said, taking medication is no bad thing (it may even help protect your body and prevent further damage) and neither is it necessarily permanent.

Hang in there.

Hi rossi

Please be kind to yourself & don't blame yourself, if diagnosed 4 weeks ago it is very early days and it take awhile to get to grips with what is going on.

When I was diagnosed, I had tests with similar results but luckily a good nurse who explained to me what was going on. I'm sorry the nurse hasn't made herself clear to you. My dad had type 2 so I wasn't new to it; but it was new to me.

When you next go to have your feet checked (not sure why they didn't do it for you last time) how about writing down what you haven't understood/ how you feel that despite your efforts test results have really rocked you/ what tests have they done & what do the results mean? Then you can go through everything step by step. Can you take someone with you and you can explain to them prior so they can also note down the answers for you to go over later; when you may be a little less stressed and can take things in.

None wants to go onto meds but I did (metformin) & now my levels are really good (ave HBA1c 6%). I enjoy my exercise eat a balanced diet & still include food I enjoy. I haven't felt this healthy in ages. My levels came down from the initial 12.3 & the tingling I had has ceased. So things will improve.

Take care

Hello Rossie - what the others have said is right - there is no comparison to be made between your fasting blood test which shows how your control is over about 3 months and a finger prick which simply says "this is what is happening now, at this precise moment" 7.4 as a fasting result is not at all bad, I struggle with mine and last time it was 8 - today I've been told it's 7.5 so you are doing ok. yes there is room for improvement but you are doing everything you can in these early stages. I wonder if this was just the "practice nurse"? some are better than others! How about asking if you can have an appt with a diabetic specialist nurse or DSN - they are better able to help work out the areas you might need more guidance with and generally will have more time to spend with you. It's just a thought. Whatever you do - please stop beating yourself up - you are doing well.

Hi Rossie, in case you haven't understood what people are saying:
The HBA1c test is when the doctor/nurse takes a blood sample and sends it off for analysis. The HBA1c value is supposed to be your average blood glucose readings over the last 2-3 months. This will obviously have high readings after eating and low readings first thing in the morning(called a fasting reading) and prior to your next meal. A 7.4 reading 1 hour after eating says you had eaten the correct food and your body is producing enough insulin and is using the glucose properly.
Unless you are able to test you will have difficulty knowing how well you are doing. You seem to be cutting out the right foods (coffee shouldn't be a problem though unless you can't drink without sugar).
If you have gained weight then this normally indicates that you are eating too much food or not getting enough exercise. Exercise is probably the easiest thing to increase and is free, in fact your doctor should have advised to to do a half hour walk 3 or 4 times a week.
Metformin will get your blood glucose readings down and may or may not afflict you with tummy problems, and is supposed to be good for your heart as well.
It's a lot to take in initially but don't give up and come back here with any of your worries.

That wasn't an example of the best "bedside" manner that you experienced. Although my practice nurse did the same test to me at the start.

The one thing that it might be worth doing is keeping a diary of water you have been eating. If you put on weight then you consumed more calories then you actually need (easy to do, don't get wound up about that). But if you want to loose weight you need to remove some of those calories! You have done really well with cutting things out of your diet so far.

Oh! Some things that you might think are OK are actually quiet nasty

Oat So Simple has in the past sent me to 14+ 😱 I had horrible problems finding the right breakfast for me.
