Relationship to Diabetes

Hi there, I haven't been around the forums for ages.

Briefly I was diagnosed around a year ago, type II after being admitted to hospital with very high sugars and very hyper.

I'm at the end of the line with maximum dose tablets and just about to be referred to a Diabetologist for insulin.

The odd thing is that people think I should be suicidal - I'm actually very happy that after 12 months of sugars between 10 and 22 and being told that monitoring my sugars was 'unnecessary' and 'harmful' (?!!?) that I'm now being taken seriously.

I've been told that Vyetta (?!) might be an option in place of Insulin. Does anyone have any experience of this?

..and... the dreaded DVLA. Do they automtically revoke my licence? Any ideas?

Regards,

Paul Nicholls
Birmingham.

Hi Paul

Glad you're looking at the positives.

If you are on insulin (not sure about the other drug) then you automatically have to inform DVLA and they issue you with a short term (anything up to 3 years I think) lisence. And you can't drive minibuses or vans (I think)

There has been chats on this forum about that drug you mentioned I think it's Byetta, I get the impression it's expensive for the NHS so you'll do well to get it, but not sure about any more.

Good luck.

Rossi

Thanks Rossi. I'll just be glad if the DVLA don't take my licence away - that's a relief at least!

i was stirchley/kings heath but moved out to stourbridge a year or so ago. my parents are still in the area though. which hospital do you go to? i'm still registered at selly oak.

I'm not registered yet Shiv, I got the referral letter today and seeing a Consultant privately next week. The rest will fall into place soon after I guess. I imagine I'll be referred to Selly Oak.

they're a lovely bunch at selly oak. the nurses are great, although i always seem to see a different doctor every time i go which is a bit frustrating.

Be careful going private as this may not entitle you to free NHS prescriptions!!

hi there paul nice to see you post, i may be in the same position as you in 3 weeks at mo im trying a higher doasage of metformin to see how it goes , like rossi said it is byetta and that is what i saw my docabout yesterday i have looked into the drug myself alot but also as rossi said it is expensive and my gp wpuld prefer me to hang back before going onto it , but anyways hope things go ok and run smoothly x

Hi Andy, Hi Steff

No problem re: NHS prescriptions, it's only the Consultant's referral I'm having chivvied along,I didn't want the 4- 6 week wait,so I go next Tuesday.

Steff: I was on 4 x 500 Metformin, 3 x Gliclazade and Simvastatin. My levels were c**p, despite very healthy eating and exercise, my HbA1C was up and down like a fiddlers elbow and rising, are you having the same problems?

I've had to really keep on with my GP as I was having daily hypers, excessive and chronic fatigue, urological problems (yes, that...) , depression, excessive sweating, desperate sleep disturbance, damage to my kidneys, lungs and neuropathy. Incredibly my GP suggested it was pointless that I test my bloods and wouldn't prescribe strips. I cottoned onto the fact I was being palmed off so had a real heart to heart with my Doctor / the diabetic nurse. When I tested at 22 at the surgery they sprang into action.

Unfortunately I had been attending my GP for around 4 - 5 years with problems, three years ago I recall saying 'Please tell me I'm not diabetic, I'm piddling constantly, have terrible sweats, driking excessively and feeling spacey between meals'. I'd been passed off simply as 'working too hard' (!) When diagnosed on my own admission to hospital I was told I had signs of long term diabetes.

Steff, I know there are some great Doctors, but I'm afraid there are some shockers too. I'm past the point of being concerned at my GP's budgetary requirement over my deteriorating health. I'm just looking forward to feeling better...

Good to meet you chaps.

Hi Andy, Hi Steff

sounds like what i go through

oops... by drinking excessively I meant liquid intake... I'm near teetotal and haven't drank alcohol for about 6 months.

Hi Paul
Re DVLA, you have to give them permission to contact your GP etc. They then request confirmation of your recent health re hypos etc. Based on this they decide what licence period they give you - with a maximum of three years. On reapplication they do the same checks, one thought is that on your clinic visits you don't over elaborate on the number (if any) hypos you've experienced since the last visit!

Thanks Ron - very helpful!

My background - I'm a Solicitor involved in litigation matters, oddly enough a number have involved insurance issues for diabetics who have gone hypo and caused collisions, sometimes with devastating consequences. One thing I will certainly do is to advise insurers in the event I'm on insulin - indeed there's a school of thought to suggest I should have already told them.

The difficulties that could arise are those of non-disclosure, and, with the insurance market the way it is presently, insurers will always try to wriggle out of any indemnity. The same, unfortunately is true of life insurance. The latin phrase is 'uberrimae fidei' (the spelling might not be so hot!) which essentially means a contract of the utmost faith .... i.e. anything material changes - you tell 'em or they'll back out.

So, I imagine that the duties to the DVLA are on equal terms.

I'll update the thread as to what goes on if I can remember to do it.

Paul.

Steff, I've just noted your HAb1C on your tag. I'm presently around 12.8 I think.

Is your GP concerned at your result at 7.2%? That seems on the high side, but managable? Good to see your results going down too. Mine were 11 something, that dropped to 10 and half or so and back up to near 13.

I'm still a rank amateur, so I'm still feeling my way!

Hi Paul, welcome back,

I remember being very worried for you when you were diagnosed. As bg was extremly high and you wernt getting good treatment. glad you are finally getting sorted. I can relate to your relief at going on insulin, you just want to be well, that was my reaction too.

good luck, let us know how you go on.

Hey Tracey! Thanks for the message mate. I'm just looking forward to next Tuesday and feeling better.... hopefully!

Nice to see you - I'm afraid work and life just got in the way between me first posting and now.

Hi Paul, I can't offer you much advice! I just wanted to wish you all the best, sounds like you have had a real tough time...I know what that feels like! I am experiencing 'terrible' care from my so called care team!...I have very complex problems and I am a 'very fat' type 2! So, I get beaten with the 'Fat Stick' constantly. I can't tolerate the Oral meds so thay are telling me 'Gastic Bypass Op' Or Nothing for my Diabetes! Will not give me Insulin because Of weight gain potentials.

Anyway, enough about me, I have my own thread, lol!

Take care and all the best...Hope you feel well soon 🙂
