Hi Susieb, welcome to the forum 🙂 Do you know what sort of insulin you will be starting on? A lot of people with Type 2 start on a slow-acting insulin that they inject once or twice a day, but some also take a fast-acting insulin when they eat. We have people here who can share their experiences with you - is there anything in particular that you would like to know? Have you been diagnosed long?
Hi SUE welcome to the site they are a great bunch of peeps on here full of support and no question is to silly. Im a type 2 I was on just meds but im now on Insatard a slow acting insulin as well, you may find that you will still have to take oral meds as well, that was my first question to my doc when it was decided that I needed to go on insulin. Going on insulin is nothing to worry about and you will feel so much better as your control improves
Take care

Hi Sue
I have been on insulin now for just over 3 month and i am still on medication to I am due to see the quack soon and am hoping that i can come off some of this medication but I have my doubts that he will advise it yet I have had no problems with the slow acting insulin i inject once a day,
I am sure you will find it OK.🙂
Thank you, kind of you to answer. I'm hoping that insulin will be the right way to go I currently take about 15 meds a day and its still not doing the trick!! Doctors tomorrow morning, when he suggests insulin this time I think I will agree.
Been Type 2 for about 15 years but I think I have progressed to a stage where the meds are no longer sufficient. Been feeling pretty lousy for a while now and have recently had to have laser treatment to the back of both eyes and surgical stockings !!! Nice eh? Annual review at the doctors tomorrow so I think when he suggests it this time I am no longer going to fight it off. Mostly I have been unenthusiastic about the probable weight gain which is why I have held off so long. I am currently a svelte 14 st having come down from 21 so I don't want to be going there again !!!
Hi Susie, you should find that the insulin makes you feel a whole lot better once you get the dosage right (can take a while). You should take the opportunity to review the driving implications of insulin treatment - restricted licence (car and trailer only) and renewal every three years. Unless you drive commercially this shouldn't be a problem (the renewals are free).
Being on insulin doesn't mean you will put on weight - you need to tackle the diet as well as adjust your insulin dosage. I presume your GP hasn't offered Byetta or Victoza (far too expensive no doubt). Don't forget that you must get a meter and test strips off your GP if you are on insulin.
Good luck but cost really shouldn't come into it when deciding on a medication for you. If your doc hasn't mentioned Byetta or Victoza maybe you should ask about its suitability for you. I was told the next step for me was insulin but my GP's nurse suggested Byetta and I got it. It has been a godsend for me, vastly improved levels and some substantial weight loss.
Lizzie - my GP did suggest Byetta but I was so freaked out by the possible side effects (I know everything has to list all possible side effects) that I pretty much decided against it. How are you finding it?
It's brilliant and I love it. I have been taking it for a year now and my Hba1c is down from 10 to 6. It did that during the first 3 months and has stayed there. I feel so much better and best of all I have lost 2.5 stone. Weight loss did come to a halt a while back but I didn't regain any. Just recently it has started dropping again which is good. I did suffer from nausea to begin with but hardly ever have it now. I think it is worth a try if you are offered it. The injections are dead easy - tiddly little needles.
