Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was diagnosed with diabetes at 12years old although I was hypoglycaemic at birth and never tested. I've never really looked after my diabetes.in 2007 my 18th birthday I was the passenger in a car crash where I lost my memory and had to learn to walk and talk again. 10years later and I've done it and pretty much back to normal with slight memory issues and the fact my mother brother and sister empties my bank account that help my compensation. I've always been ignorant with my diabetes but I've tried a few times to grab control of it but I sort of gave up with everything. Just wondered if there's any boot camp type things as I really need to get a hold of it. Any advice or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Michael Wright. Not many of us are posting at 1.45am!
For managing type 1 diabetes, there are education courses run by clinics in many areas. DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) is the best known and widest known, but some areas gave their own courses.
For help with head injury effects, dealing with money etc, Headway is the national charity. I know there are local charities, too. A friend of mine who had a head injury and was helped in Cheshire recently ran Dragon's Back Race, raising funds for the charity that helped him.

Hello to Michael.

Gosh you have been through so much. Great you now want to take control and this forum will help. We have a waking blood sugars thread which you cam post on and see your progress, you will get loads of support and people here will answer any questions. Do you have any medical diabetic support? As Copepod said there are many good courses around. Sending all my support.

Welcome, sorry you have had a rough ride

Hi - well this is a good step, joining the forum. yes there are courses, I'd been T1 for over 30 years when I did mine, I thought I knew a lot already but I certainly learned one heck of a lot more which started helping me immediately and has done ever since. If no-one has offered to enrol you on one, ASK. Or there is an online one you can easily do - but if you can get on a local one, it's great cos everyone there is in the same boat - and of course YOUR prior knowledge can help new recruits to D - and also assist the 'teachers' getting their points across, if you've experienced whatever point they're trying to get across. These are very sociable courses, where everyone talks to one another and compares what they each do or would do in a situation.

Is your avatar a photo of you? What bike have you got?

Hello Michael and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry you've been through so much. You need to sort out your family as well as the D!
