When Rolly and Christine Labelle won the use of a motorhome through a contest last September, they jumped at the chance to take a family adventure and headed for the Kettle Valley before they sent the kids back to school in Abbotsford.

An outdoor enthusiast, Rolly took his son Zach, almost 9, for a hike. It was hot, but they had gone on hikes before, so Rolly was surprised his son was lagging behind.

?He was hot, his face red and he was thirsty,? he said, but put it down to the heat. But the youngster had been urinating frequently, up to four times a night, and his mom thought he looked like he had lost weight. When they got home, she took Zach to their doctor thinking he may have a bladder infection.

At 9 p.m. on Sept. 22, their doctor called to say Zach had been diagnosed with Type I diabetes, and to take him to the hospital that night.
