Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I've been type 2 for 8 years, very well managed with Metformin & life style (exercise and diet). Last November 2019 I had most of my Pancreas and all my Spleen removed due to Pancreatic Cancer - now awaiting Chemo, joy of joys! Following the op I was put on Abasaglar that has had to be gradually increased from 12 to now 28 units and I still struggle to manage my D as well as before. I'm unclear if I should be telling the DVLA anything, at the hospital they had said not but then I thought this was a temporary medicine, and it now looks like it isn't! Do I get a 3 month period before I need to tell them? My 1st post so I hope I've got the style ok!

Hi, Endless Knot, and welcome to the forum. Driving regs are always a bit of a minefield.
The wording is here.

It says that you need to tell them if your insulin treatment 'lasts (or will last)' more than three months, so if you’re not expecting to be able to stop in the next couple of weeks,(and it’s sounds unlikely that you will) I think you need to tell them now.

Hi! As you have had most of an underperforming pancreas removed I think you have more chance of winning the lottery than going back to diet and Metformin alone.
Abasaglar is a modified insulin. So tell the DVLA to get the ball rolling and then focus on your management.

I agree. It certainly seems better to tell them earlier rather than leave it last minute.

Thanks to all for advice. DVLA notified on-line this morning. A bit of a palaver going through the verification process but it seems more straightforward than using the paper route as that asks more questions. Also told my car insurers, SAGA, and they advised no issue unless DVLA say 'no' (most unlikely) or I cease to be main driver (a possibility).
