If my average bg reading is around 8.0, what would my A1c be? I use an accu-chek aviva meter, if that has any bearing on it.

There is a formula that can help you relate your average BG from your meter to your HbA1c, but it does depend a lot on when you test as to how accurate a prediction it will give. For example, if you only ever test before meals, your average will be pretty low, whereas if you also test after eating to find your peak then your average will be more representative and higher.

There's a converter here:

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-to-blood-sugar-level-converter.html

It says 8.0 mmol/l average BG is equivalent to 7% HbA1c
