Hi all,

Newly diagnosed with gestational - but concerns regarding possible T2. My A1C was 50.
Could this be pregnancy hormones from last three months or T2 potential?

Welcome. Sorry I can't help . I hope someone who can cons along soon.
You could try the Diabetes helpline .

The first one - lots of ladies with GD give birth and wake up next day without diabetes.

However - it is a sign that the person's body has already demonstrated a likelihood of becoming diabetic again whenever it's had enough stresses placed upon it again (and don't be under any illusions - pregnancy places ENORMOUS stresses on every single organ in your body)

Thing is though - other than milestones like pregs, we have constant stresses on our bodies. The stress of bringing up kids. The stress of worrying about income. The stress of driving. The stress of any other illness either we or our children have. The stress of holidays! The stress of LIFE itself.

None of these might ever be bad enough to be as significant stress as pregnancy - but what about cumulatively?

Hence - for ever after now - you will be invited to have an HbA1c blood test every single year, since the risk of your becoming diabetic again in future is so likely.

Later in preg you may need to be on insulin even if you aren't already. However this does not necessarily mean you will need it again, should you eventually morf into a T2. But because of the risks of damage to the baby if your BG remains uncontrolled in pregnancy - they use THE most effective means known to reduce it - which in other cases, would likely be regarded as using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Hope that makes sense!
