Hey all,

Sorry I've not been online much the last few months..

Hope everyone is good. So I had my A1C result again = 8%. Not great but not terrible I guess. Anyway I'm due to do my DAFNE course in October and really want to be low 7's or below 7% if possible.

So in order to do this I know I need amazing bs from now on and a problem i've started having is going to bed at say 6.7 and then waking up at 16 😱 I'm really trying to avoid the 3am test as I'm shattered and need as much sleep as I can get. So, does anyone have any ideas on why this is or solutions which don't involve getting up at 3am? Help appreciated 🙂

How do you feel when you wake in the morning? Usually, if it's a rebound high (i.e. you dropped low in the night and your liver kicked in to save you) then you will have a terrible hypo hangover. If you just feel lethargic then it's possible it just climbs through the night or from the early hours. I'm afraid the only sure fire way is the 3.am test - but you should also consider that, if you are having night hypos then there is no guarantee your liver will respond to raise your levels, so it's really important you find out.

Your high morning reading could be the cause of you being shattered. As Northerner points out, 'nypos' tire you out. Also, so do high BGs in general. I find it very hard to get out of bed if mine's gone up as high as 9, so I can only imagine how terrible it must feel at 16!

You'll definitely need to do a nighttime test - that'll tell you what the problem is, so you can fix it and wake up feeling much better the next morning!

Hi, I am just chipping in to agree with the others that the only way to find out what's going on is to wake up and test in the early hours. However you don't need to get up to do this - keep your meter on your bedside table, then you can wake up, test and go straight back to sleep.

I was worried this would disturb my husband but he normally doesn't even notice and he's more concerned about my health than to complain.

Do you ever get up to go to the toilet in the night? If so then you can test then - whatever time it is - at least then you will be able to work on a process of elimination to find out when the rise is happening.

Good luck - it's worth it, once you find out what's happening you'll feel more in control. Knowledge is power, as they say!

Hi all - thanks... I guess it was wishful thinking to hope I wouldn't need to do a 3am! Alarm clock is set. Here's to getting tighter control 🙂

How did last night go?

I'm also going to do more 3am tests, it is a pain but I get back to sleep quickly and I guess I am used to it because I have 2 children anyway, you get used to unbroken nights sleep I guess lol.

I am having my pre-DAFNE blood test on Thursday and am actually dreading what my HBA1C will be, it's making me really anxious as I am worried it it going to be higher than last time (7.3 I think I was??) but I guess that is what DAFNE is for, to help reduce it. I would really like mine under the 6.5% range but realise that isn't always easy to achieve!

Thanks Northerner 🙂

Hey Laura, Last night wasn't great but only because I went to bed with levels at 11 - so not an ideal start. Hoping tonight will be good as currently sitting happy at 7.4 so 3am will hopefully tell more this time.
I'm sure your HbA1c will be great - will keep fingers crossed for you... when do you start your Dafne?
Under 6.5% would be my ideal... one day i'll get there I just have to be more rigid and less lazy I think!
