Hi everyone

I spent a good hour this afternoon with the Diabetic Specialist Nurse at the hospital. She was following up on insulin training. Now 4 jabs a day plus Metformin My levels are much improved but not quite there yet, but I can now up/change/alter the insulin dosage as required and then go back and she her in 6 months.

But as a T2, the good news is that she is referring me to attend a one to one, 1 day DAFNE course, as she feels that could be of use to me.

I understand that DAFNE courses are usually for T1s, but the hospital is running a pilot scheme for T2s, to see how they get on.

I am really excited about this as I have read here that it has proved useful to you - but also excited that I have finally LOST a few pounds since starting on insulin 10 weeks ago.

I hope you will forgive me for wanting to share this with you but I am, for the first time in ages, feeling pretty damn positive. Together we will make this whole diabetes thing easy peasy/

Hi Hazel, that's great news all round - well done on your success and good luck with the DAPHNE course - it's nice to hear of a health authority branching out on their own ideas for a change. Good luck with your continuing insulin regime. Kind regards,

Terrific news Hazel, really pleased to hear that things are turning out so positively! I think good news like yours gives everyone a boost, so thanks for letting us know!🙂 And well done on the weight loss too!🙂

Hazel, lovely to hear your update and that you are feeling much more positive - I am delighted for you. Congratulations on the weight loss too - it is so demoralising when nothing seems to work despite your own best efforts.

Also very pleased to hear that your hospital is piloting DAFNE for Type 2s as it has always struck me as bizarre that Type 2's on insulin were not eligible for such courses. Mind you I am aware that many Type 1s have not had access either so situation across the UK is not really satisfactory yet

not sure what it stands for exactly, but it is a means of measuring carbs intake to allow accurate insulin intake - I think

no doubt I wil?l? find out more

Hi

I'm a little thick - what is DAFNE?

Ceara

Not thick at all, it stands for dose adjustment for normal eating. It's a diabetes education course that is run in many parts of the country. Mainly focussed around carb counting but with a lot more thrown in. Other areas have their own courses with different names and their are others aimed for type two, desmond is the one that springs to mind. Officially speaking every pct should offer diabetes education to all diabetics, but I think how well this is done is I think patchy.

hi hazel really great news, good luck with DAFNE x

Great news Hazel, I'm so pleased things are looking up for you.
I have only heard good reports from DAFNE so you should do well and have all the extra tools to control your diabetes.

Best wishes
Sue

thats great news Hazel, I think it's brilliant that type2's may be able to have proper access to these courses. I'm sure you will be soon confident adjusting your insulin doses, keeping detailed records will definatly help with that.

That's great news. Hope you enjoy the course. Makes me quite jealous but hoping that we all get a change.
