Hi all,

I'm Nat. I was here a few years ago. Diagnosed with type 3c diabetes. Eventually had bariatric surgery (I'm still fat, not a success story but not a fail) and appeared to go into remission. So perhaps not 3c after all but type 2?

Anyway I had my diabetes review with the nurse this morning, which I've been asking for for about 18 months. My HBA1C is 43 (was 39 in September) so I'm back in the prediabetic category.

Feeling absolutely overwhelmed and panicked, no idea what to do etc and then realised how helpful this place was before.

So yeah, hi. Now to figure out where to start.

Welcome back, can you remind us what medication you are on and what diet are you following.
Your diabetic Type is determined by the cause, Type 3c would be as a result if damage to the pancreas.

I'm not following any particular diet at the moment, but have been trying to make small adjustments to lower my carb intakes.

I was previously on Lantus, and dapaflagozlin (which I'm sure I've misspelled) but both stopped post bariatric surgery, and I am currently medication free.

The initial diagnosis of 3c came because of the multiple occasions of acute pancreatitis I'd suffered with proper to my sudden diagnosis.

Welcome back.

Can I just say that an HbA1c of 43 is still incredibly good considering that you were on insulin and a Flozin to help you manage your diabetes before, so a big well done in that respect! Pleased you have come back to the forum to help support and motivate you to tweak things a bit to try to push it back down into the normal range again. Many of us find that lowering carbs helps not only to stabilize BG levels but also to reduce the cravings, particularly if you have a tendency to comfort eat which I was prone to do.
What sort of things are you currently eating for breakfast, lunch and evening meal? Perhaps we can make some suggestions for swaps or alternative meals that you might like, which would be less challenging for your diabetes. Do you test your BG levels before and 2 hours after meals, so that you can see which foods cause you a problem and which you can get away with?

I've just ordered some new test strips to arrive tomorrow. And will be testing in the morning. I last tested early Jan first thing and was 6.3 then. I can't even remember what I'm aiming for!

My diet at present is awful. I've had some extreme stress going on and my comfort food is french fries crisps. I have multiple packs a day. I do pair with a piece of cheese.

Breakfast is usually an iced latte. With a splash of simple syrup which I guess I need to change up. Lunch tends to be sandwich based. Dinner is very varied but almost always from scratch so entirely adjustable. Probably a bit too heavy on the carbs at the moment.

Bread I'm currently switching over to sourdough.

The biggest thing I need to tackle at the moment I think is the snacking. I need something with a satisfying crunch as that seems to calm the horrid thoughts in my head a bit.

I am the same with craving something crunchy a lot of the time. There seems to be something really satisfying about eating things that need a good chew. I tend to steer clear of higher carb foods, but I much prefer crunchy peanut butter over smooth and the mixed seeds I have in my morning yoghurt provide that crunch or a packet of roasted nuts and I have been very naughty today and bought 4 packets of pork scratchings and one is gone already! They are my real guilty pleasure.... a perfect combination of protein and fat and salt and crunch with no carbs!

Lovely to see you posting again @stackingcups

Sounds like you are already developing a plan to steer things back in the right direction. Sorry about the stress you are experiencing at the moment. Hope that begins to ease, and that you are able to find reliable strategies to work through it in the meantime.

Waking reading this morning was 6.3 which isn't as bad as I'd convinced myself in my head (4-7 is ok I think?)

Assuming they guidance for Type 3c is the same as for T1, then the general advice is to aim for:

5-7mmol/L before breakfast
4-7mmol/L before all other meals
And to aim for 9mmol/L by 2hrs after meals.

But that if using CGM 25% of the time can be above 10mmol/L, but that time below 4.0 should be as low as possible, and definitely below 4%
