Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Dr. Elliott Joslin wrote the following article in 1950. It gives a report on Type 1 diabetes for the years 1900-1950. It is very interesting to be able to compare the now with the then while reading this article. Type 1 diabetics, and others, should find the article very interesting...rather startling too.

Extremely interesting, thanks.

So, 100 years ago, on diagnosis, I could only expect to live for 4.3 years. And 50 years ago it was 18.7. Man.

Fascinating Richard. I was told at diagnosis that my lifespan would probably be about 10 years less than normal. Bit of a bummer at age 13 🙄

The quote that struck me from that article is "Education is everything for the diabetic" and

"one must pay frequent visits to the clinic for instruction
and control during the first week. After the first
week the patient's interest begins to wane. Strike, therefore,
while the iron is hot."

It would do the NHS policy makers good to take heed. Life as a diabetic starts on day 1. But the proper education seems to take weeks, months or years to begin.

A wonderful thing to read. Nice to see that things still apply from a while back.
