Type 1.5 LADA
Hello everyone. I was originally diagnosed with type 2 in April 2014 but eventually got my correct diagnosis on 17 December - officially type 1.5 - LADA. I am not finding it too emotionally or physically challenging (yet) as my daughter has been type 1 for almost 22 years since she was 3 so I have expert guidance on tap! Looking forward to getting to know some fellow middle aged newly diagnosed type 1ers 🙂

Hello Mrsmonte and welcome.🙂 Glad to hear you've been properly diagnosed finally!

Welcome to the forum, Mrsmonte.

Several of us were diagnosed T1D as adults - I was 30 years old, nearly 20 years ago.

Hi Mrsmonte, welcome to the forum 🙂 I was diagnosed aged 49 - so much for 'juvenile' diabetes 🙂 I'm interested - when they thought you were T2, presumably due to age, what medication were you given, and how did you arrive at your T1.5 diagnosis? What medication are you on now?

Thanks for the lovely welcome . I was originally diagnosed with type 2 and started on metformin 3 times a day. This was later increased to 4 times a day then gliclazide added in once a day when my sugar levels continued to rise. After pushing hard I was given the GAD antibodies test. Results came in 4 weeks later. The diabetic staff at the hospital are of the opinion I should have been tested for type 1 way back in April as I had all the classic symptoms. Main thing is I'm on the correct meds now: novorapid 3 times a day and Lantus once a day. Feel so much better already!

I suspect I would have followed a similar path, but although I had symptoms for about 18 months it wasn't until I ended up with DKA that I got diagnosed. The day after I was started on insulin I felt the healthiest I had done for ages! 🙂

Hi Mrsmonte
Another older diagnosis here, in January last year at 40. Sadly I ended up in a pretty bad way before diagnosis so it took me a while to feel human but feel better now than I had for about two years prior to diagnosis. It's not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, mostly very irritating 🙄

Welcome aboard!

18 months!!! You poor thing. I'm keen to get back to running but haven't been running since I began to feel unwell in April. New year, new challenge!

I was due to run a marathon the week I was diagnosed 😱 My consultant says that my running probably made me very sensitive to the declining insulin I was producing, then I caught a virus and that is what pushed me over the edge. Do get back to your running - set yourself a goal of an event! 🙂 I've done a few since diagnosis and have a half-marathon and a marathon planned for this year 🙂 Running will help enormously with your control!

Similar story to me. Aged 42, Diagnosed type 2 in the September, Metformin, then Gliclazide, then finally diagnosed with type 1 in the July. Like you, once on the insulin, I felt immediately so much better. 🙂. Hello and welcome 🙂

Welcome to the forum mrsmonte. I was a late starter too at around 56 so I guess you are never too old to join the club
