Hey jus lookin for a bit of help , iv only bn.dignoused 3 months with type 1 but I dont feel tthat I am getin anywer with bringin my sugers down they have come dwn abit highest being around 14. Iv made my portions of food alot smaller but still feel hungry after them so makin them smaller again is just gonna make me.feel even hungrier. I get realy frustratrd all of the time :( x

Hi Keris, it can take a little while for you to learn what is best for you and get your levels down consistently. The main thing you need to be careful about is carbohydrates. It would be a good idea to spend a week writing down in a food diary everything (and I mean everything!) that you eat. Write down how many carbs were in the meals, snacks or drinks and also write alongside it your blood sugar levels before you ate and then one and two hours afterwards, and the insulin you took before eating.

This might sound like a lot of testing, but it is the best way to learn what types of food raise your levels the most and what is OK. Don't worry too much if you see some high numbers to begin with - this is about learning what works best for you. If you are hungry then protein in your meals - like eggs, fish, meat, nuts etc. will help fill you up, or you can eat lots of vegetables instead of potatoes, pasta, rice etc.

Hi Keris,
please ring your diabetes nurse and ask for help in altering the doses of insulin you are on. Being type 1 and newly diagnosed means your pancreas is now dying out altogether so you need more injected insulin. You should not need to cut your food intake to the stage where you are hungry :(

I am in contact with my nurse 🙂 she has upped my insulin to 14 units 3x a day & 12 at nighy . I have an appoinment with her tuesday .. Im a very fussy eater too I dont like fish & only like peas wen it comes to veg .. Its hard work :(

Hi Keris, You shouldn't have to reduce your meal sizes, the idea is to eat a healthy, normal diet and adjust your insulin to allow you to eat what you want. In the short term, foods high in protein and low in carbs such as eggs, cheese, meat, fish and nuts will fill you up without affecting your sugar levels.

In the long term, you should get the chance to go on a carb counting course which will teach you to adjust your insulin for the carbs you are eating. Keeping a food diary like Northerner suggested is a good idea and something you will need to do in the future.

I'm veggie so am classed as fussy too! I wouldn't worry about the fish but do make sure you are eating fruit to make up for the lack of veg. Have you tried cooking your veg in slightly different ways, like in soup, in a sauce with pasta? Veg can be dull on its own but with the right herbs and spices they can be tasty! I'm am veggie though so I would say that wouldn't I?!

Hi Keris,
the idea is to match your insulin to what you eat, not your food to the amount of insulin. I don't eat veg either except for peas and carrots 🙂

Things will soon start to slot into place for you and it will become almost second nature to you.
Being diagnosed is a big shock to anybody I would have thought and a very steep learning curve. Rome wasn't built in a day 🙂

Well there were a number of things I didn't used to think I liked at one time; until I started cooking them myself and discovered my mother cooked em wrong! Cooked in a different manner or in different combinations with other things, can make a LOT of difference!

EG If you like curry - have a mixed veg curry. All you taste is the curry! Or if you like cheese - cover it in cheese, ditto!

Or some things I'd only ever had cooked and hated, I found I liked raw. And vice versa!

hope speaking to your diabetes nurse will help you sort out the insulin side of things, browsing the recipe pages on here could help with some ideas for the variety of things you can eat..... its not easy when you are a fussy eater (i am!!!) but i try to have different meals that i will eat and rotate them so i dont have the same stuff all the time

Hi Keris, please do listen to the other posts here - it's not about reducing or even necessarily changing what you're eating...your insulin should match what you were already eating.

Ask your DSN to explain carb-counting to you and that you'd like to go on the DAFNE course. (you can't really learn carb-counting in an hour appt) but it will definitely help you more than you are now.

Even if you come away with nothing else, get her to give you a carb:insulin ratio and then you can use us to analyse your results and see if anything needs changing. Your ratios are unlikely to stay the same from what she will initially put you on, but it's a starting point.

Good luck, and please keep asking questions 🙂

Thanks everyone for the advice .. I will see what my nurse says tuesday. 🙂 im realy usless with all this carbs and what not so its gonna take me sumtym.. It was actually my dietition.who told me to make my portions smaller, but I feel they are as small as I can get them any smaller & I may aswell not have it lol 🙂 xx
