Hello, I'm Sam and I'm new to this forum and diabetes.

My story began around June last year when I was taken into A&E after a nosebleed that would not stop after Two hours and the paramedics could not also get it to stop. While ENT was fixing me up and I was being discharged the nurse at the door stopped me and said the Doctor wanted to go over my bloods as something needed attention. I was taken to a side room where I had my blood glucose taken which read 23/mmol/L followed by my Ketones which just read HIGH(over 8.0) . I was then swiftly wired up to insulin and glucose machines and spent the next Two weeks in the diabetes ward recovering and learning about diabetes.

I should point out that before this I was abusing alcohol daily between 16/24 pints of Stella and generally not looking after myself.

For the next 4 months or so I was in and out of the hospital being taken into resuscitation(ICU) and spent a couple of months in the diabetes ward. As soon as I was discharged I turned back to alcohol and my sugars were always above 20 and sometimes hitting 32. After a dark time, I took an insulin overdose and was back in hospital where I begged for more alcohol support. I was discharged with acamprosate(now take naltrexone also) and with the support of the alcohol team and my beautiful wife(couldn't be sober without how amazing shes been), I started to face life day by day and try to take diabetes seriously and also my general health.

I'm now 5 and a half months abstinent and spend 100%(dam sensor dropped my perfect readings with a false hypo) of the time within range. My fasting BS is mostly between 4.4mmol/L and 4.9mmol/L, my HBA1C dropped from 122 to 32 last week. Slow-acting insulin was 20 units morning and night and fast-acting 6/8 units(I hadn't learned to carb count yet). I now take 3 units in the morning and 2 at night. Nothing with food as I don't spike higher than 7/8mmol/L after food. Next week they are looking to withdraw insulin altogether.

Anyway, I'm sorry for the little story. I'm happier sober than I have been for years and I have lost 30lbs without alcohol!

I forgot to note that even though I have selected type 1.5 LADA I know I am not actually that type but ketone-prone diabetes. I didn't see an option for that.

Welcome to the forum @ident

And thanks for sharing your story so openly and candidly.

Massive congratulations on getting sober - and great that you are feeling so much better without it, and have lost weight too!

Sounds like you are doing amazingly well with your diabetes management too. Well done!

Welcome @ident 🙂 Well done on an amazing 5 and a half months of sobriety- that is very impressive! Well done too on getting to grips with your diabetes and your weight loss😎

Might be best to choose the other type option, people will get confused about a type 1 not being on insulin

Congratulations on your changes so far, that sounds life changing!

I didn't see an option for that.

We do have an ‘Other type’ which some members use who are either of an unconfirmed type, or who have a rare or unusual form.

What an amazing story, sad at first, but triumphant later, to ongoing success.

No one knows just how tough it must have been for you except you, so it took some courage, guts, fear, detetmination, etc to nail this success.

It's a life choice, as are all things really, so, good luck on your continued journey.

We do try!
