17 years ago this very day, around about this time 7am, I was being prepped for surgery to remove two thirds of my pancreas, it was growing a nasty tumour, and all of my spleen. I was 60 miles from home in another county, and there was no chance I was going to be home for Christmas. As it happened I wasn’t home for New Year either! The apple sized tumour was removed and checked over, it was a pre cancerous tumour. Phew! Of course I’m now a Type 3c insulin dependent diabetic, take penicillin every single day as I have low immunity because I’m spleenless. I have various ongoing gastric issues because of the surgery but…..I’m alive and well ( ish)! I once thought I’d never see 50, but I’m now hurtling ( too quickly) towards my state pension, just another 16 months, I’m hanging on for that!
This day is always a bitter sweet memory, I spent Christmas away from my family, I was very ill and at the time I thought I’d never get better. But the surgeons changed my life that day, as without the surgery, I doubt I’d be here mithering you lot everyday with my inane ramblings!
Always grateful.
