Where have you been for the past few months? I have just stumbled across this forum and I feel so reassured that I can now share experiences with so many people in the same situation. Our son - out of the blue - was diagnosed in June of this year. He is on 2 insulin injections a day along with Novorapid before meals if required. We are settling down to a routine now (after the initial shock) his levels are still a little up and down but luckily he hasn't experienced any Hypers yet. I am looking forward to sharing ideas with regards to meals and snacks. We are currently living in Portugal the medical treatment our son has experienced here has been fantastic. He had a 2 week stay in hospital and we are now under a specialist in Faro for regular check ups. The only problem we have is that there arn't any english speaking groups that we can share information with. So this forum is going to be so helpful to us.

Hello and Welcome to the forum Janet , anything you are not sure about just ask and someone will be able to help or advise you. We have quite a few parents of Diabetic children who will be able to reassure you that things do get easier🙂

Hi Janet,

Nice to see you on the forum but I am sorry it is the case that you have needed to join us through your childs diagnosis. It will no doubt be interesting to hear your experiences in Portugal compared to ours here in the UK. However I am very relieved to hear that you speak well of your healthcare experiences so far, what a relief.

This forum is a great support network, especially for those with children who have diabetes. I hope you feel at home here with us and please ask any questions. A very warm welcome.

Lou x

Hi Janet, my son is also 8 and was diagnosed in August, 5 weeks and 6 days ago to be precise! I totally understand the shock, glad you found this site, it's helped me enormously. There's always someone here who will give you a bit of advice or moral support when you need it. Feel free to message me any time.
Caryn 🙂

I am so overwhelmed by the replies I have received. Thank you so much for being there!! As I am so new to this, do I reply collectively or on an individual basis. Also (as native as I am ...does PM mean post message?) Sorry!! in 2009 you would think I should know.

I am interested to compare the differences in UK & Portugal. I know our blood readings are measured differently. ie: UK 5.5mmol/l - is read as 100mg/dl here in Portugal UK 7.8mmol/l - is 140mg/dl I have been given a chart of comparisons by our specialist (who over here, give you their mobile number so can ring them at anytime if you have any concerns) I think our readings here are the same as USA. I have been told that my son is going through a 'honeymoon period' where by his pancreas (although defunctional) is secreting his own natural insulin (temporarily) which will have an effect on his readings at present. His readings should be (at the moment) between 5.5mmol/ & 10mmol/l = (in Portugal) 100mg/dl & 180mg/dl but in time (after the honeymoon period) they should be between 4.4mmol/l & 7.8mmol/l = (in Portugal) 80mg/dl & 140mg/dl.

How often do you have your check up's? (what do they entail) and how often do you get blood checks done?

Here begins lesson one!!!

Thank you so much
Janet

Hi Janet, in the UK you divide the US readings by 18 to get mmol/l. In the first year you will probably expect an HbA1c check every 6 months (or maybe more for a child). This is a 3 month average and a little different to a normal reading, which is just a 'snapshot'. An ideal HbA1c is below 6.5% and pre-meal meter readings would be between 4 and 7 mmol/l.

The 6 monthly blood checks can vary, depending on what other checks are being taken at the same time - more blood may be taken for cholesterol checks.

Hope this helps a little!🙂
