I have just tested my FBG and it is the highest it has ever been since diagnosis - 8.5 :( I am due to have my HBAIC results next week and as I hadn't heard anything i am assuming it is OK but do i need to worry about this? can BS just change so dramatically in such a short time?

Hi carina, I hope you are not coming down with something.

I suspect the answer might be yes depends on what the before and afters were. The difference for me between this mornings fbg and the previous one I did at the weekend was 1.8! (my fbg's usually bounce around +/- 0.4)

For me I?ve put that down to the fact last week I had a nasty cough cold and I?m starting to get rid of it, I?ve been a little naughty with evening snacking and the wind has changed direction.

Hi Carina, we all get these occasional unexplained higher-than-expected levels and it won't have an effect on your HbA1c unless it starts becoming the norm. The whole business of what level we wake at is so complex, but we often oversimplify it as we get used to seeing around the same figure every morning. Can you think of any reason why it might have been higher? Do you know what it was before bed? If not, then it's hard to say whether it increased at all overnight or remained steady. Try not to worry about it - you have been doing so well that I'm sure your review will go well 🙂

My morning FBG tends to be around 8 but my other readings are almost always within the recommended levels. Should i worry about that FBG as it is the only 'high' reading I get?

Hope your review goes well Carina, sorry if I have done a bit of a hijacking here!

Thanks I appreciate all your comments 🙂 Normally my FBG is upper 6's (ie 6.7 etc) but just lately it has been 7.4 and one morning 7.8 which is the reading i was flagged up at at diagnosis so an 8.5 reading this morning did shock me a bit. I will test tonight beore bedtime and again tomorrow morning but i do tend to have a bedtime 'snack' last night i had a mini snickers type bar (the ones you get in a big bag with various mini chocolates) but that is not unusual for me as i've had OK readings even eating those. I will keep an eye on things and of course am due to see my DN next Tues so any issues i can discuss with her.

I don't think i'm coming down with anything as i feel quite well of late and go to the gym every day in my lunch hour so apart from this (which i hope is a blip) i feel fine. I'm not ready to go on medication just yet and hope to be able to avoid this for a while longer.

Barb, you might want to try testing you BG before bed when you do a FBG the next day. What I find is that I don't change much overnight - normally I go up by 0.2 or 0.4

Is your FBG high, but your bedtime also high? If this was the case then it might suggest looking at what you eat just before bed. I do find that my bedtime snack can't be anything more carby then a slice of cheese and some lettuce (even low GI nuts seem to push me up overnight).

Thanks for replying Mark. My bedtime bg tends to be about 6-7, then I wake up and it's 8! I guess it is probably the dp thing but it is annoying. I just wonder how important it is if all my other levels are within the limits?

Just to let you know, i had a cheese straw to eat just before bedtime the other night and my next morning FBG was 6.8. It sounds like it may have been the mini snickers bar i had the night before to raise my FGB to 8.5 the following morning but i'm not entirely convinced as i have eaten chocolate before with a cup of tea before bedtime and my FBG's were within guideline recommendations so am still a little confused

Carina,

Some evenings, I will be naughty and have some garlic bread, or even a Green & Black's hot chocolate at bed time. I have fully expected to spike but no, 7.1

Whereas, I can be very "good" and sometimes my morning reading is way too high, up in the 8's.

Stress definitely affects my fasting readings, have you been under any recently?

Donna 🙂

This very interesting, the last 2 nights I have had a biscuit just before bed as I have needed to take tablets (nasty throat/chest virus thing), the next 2 mornings have seem me under 8 for the first times! Best excuse i can think of for a bed time biccie!
