I love my potatoes and my levels cope well with them, however I am starting to get slightly fed up of having to have them EVERY night, what would you guys suggest? baring in mind I do need carbs at the moment to get my weight up, I've thought about maybe serving fish on a bed of oats with veggies etc, but I was wondering how others coped with the likes of lentils. split peas, pearl barley etc and if you bolus the same for them as other things, any help really would be greatly appreciated as I am finding it difficult to make these changes without the professional help I need and deserve but I AM TRYING :( x

Do you like cous cous Kaylz? So easy to make and about 23 grams of carb in 100 grams serving which isn’t massively different to boiled potatoes.

I've never tried it but I was looking at this stuff
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/262365915
Under 20g per 100g so would leave more room either for other stuff or have a bit more of it!
Is it quite filling? And what would you suggest to serve it with? My family aren't very experimental so I've never had the likes of this but I'm willing to give anything a go at least once! Haha 🙂 x

I tend to have it with Moroccan food Kaylz but you can serve it with anything and match it to what you’re eating because there’s so many flavours. I’d probably bulk it out with mushrooms but I seem to remember you’re not keen on them. I also do peppers and onions in the oven which are delicious with it.

I can eat mushrooms now in small amounts, peppers I cant stand but onions I love, will see if my local stocks the above and maybe give it a go lol xx

I usually serve couscous with something fairly sloppy, like a casserole ( Moroccan flavours are good, as Amigo says) because you need some ot the casserole liquid to soak into the couscous to give it some flavour, it would be fairly boring and dry on its own.

Would rice be an option? Basmati works well for me.

Do you bolus as you would for other foods with cous cous? x

I'm not sure really, I'm still so nervous of changing and trying things, I'm petrified I end up sky high and unable to cope :( x

Yes, I find as part of a mixed meal, with a piece of protein and some veg, it works the same as if I was having pasta or potato, I calculate the carbs and it seems to balance out. ( They seem to work for me, rice I have a problem with, but I think that's my fault, as I tend to eat rice as a risotto, or an accompaniment to a seafood sauce, where there tends to be larger ratio of rice, and less protein to slow the whole thing down)
Green lentils also work for me. I tend to boil them for half an hour ( unsalted, salt toughens them) drain them, then chuck them in a casserole with some onion and sausages ( browned first) and tinned tomato and shove the whole thing in the oven for an hour. They do tend to be a bit slower going in to the system, I only bolus at the last minute. But you could always have half a slice of bread with it, to mop up the sauce, and have the effect of balancing up the speed of absorption of the meal.
I know experimenting is a big deal for you, I'm not suggesting you try and do everything at once, but if you could add in a little bit of something new, say, a tablespoon of couscous instead of one of your potatoes, and when you're happy that you've got the insulin dose and timing right, then try a larger portion. Similarly lentils, cook a portion, and put it in the fridge, then try a tablespoonful of it with a meal, note the effect, and then have some more the next night. Both are cheap enough that if you waste a bit of it, it's not going to break the bank.

Me too. Basmati is a pretty good match for NovoRapid for me, up to around 60g-70g carbs is relatively straightforward I find.

I have started steamimg mushrooms and onions. Developed an intense liking for a steamed onion.

I'm fine with brown rice, I just need a tiny bit more insulin (half a unit for me) than I would with potatoes.
If you could try some for lunch at the weekend some time, you'd have all afternoon to test and see how it effects you and do any necessary corrections, and there wouldn't be the worry of going to bed high.

Wow I only just upped my dinner time carbs to 30g on Friday so certainly not ready for that, haha x

Yes I may give that a go after Christmas, don't have time this week with all the last appointments of the year being based around lunch times! Haha, and my hands aren't in the state for full on testing at the moment so would prefer if they had a bit more time to heal before I needed to do anything like that 🙂 xx

Not compulsory 😉

I generally find there’s an upper limit to the reliable working of my bolus ratio. Anything up to 60-70g, and certainly 30g, would match NR well for me. Above that and I might need to look at spreading the dose out a bit.
