Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
I began my life sentence. That was the day 'they' told me I had diabetes and it's been quite a ride. Initially mis-diagnosed as T2 cos I'm fat and way over 40, I had to nag, and nag, and nag for ages to get anyone to listen when the meds didn't work. The great and glorious Metfartin only made me sicker and the Gliclazide caused hypos so 'they' took me off it again. Eventually I was given a mixed insulin Humulin I, and Byetta, which sort of worked, but not really. I had some truly spectacular hypos and highs, especially the hypos, I think my record is 1.2 though my meter has registered 'LO' in the past as well. And so it went till last year when I finally persuaded them to let me try MDI, since when it's been Lantus/Novorapid/Victoza and my HbA has got stuck at 5.5 for the last 4 quarters, although I've actually been doing basal/bolus on the QT with the connivance of my DSN. Hypo days are becoming rarer and the Big D is one area of my life that is well managed.

I still face a lot of health challenges, but for now at least, diabetes is not one of them. I have work on the others, but that's another story.

I'm sure I say this every year, but I'm so glad I found this place with a couple of days of Dx. The support, encouragement and friendship I found here have saved my life and the form is an important part of my life now, couldn't do it without you.

Happy anniversary Alison, not the happiest 7 years I'm sure, but I for one am glad to have met you and without the delightful diabetes neither of us would be here. Hope the next seven years prove better health wise and involve lots of lovely crafting experiences 🙂

Happy diaversary. X

Happy anniversary Alison, thank goodness for this forum and for well managed D 🙂 I hope things improve for you health wise and you keep producing beautiful crochet artifacts.🙂

Happy Anniversary, good to see that you have got things under control

Aye, happy anniversary, though I'm sure it's one you could live without. It's good to have you around, though, another defiant voice from Gods own country. Hugs and kisses xxx

Happy Diaversary Alison! I well remember all those struggles, and I'm so pleased to see that you have finally found a workable solution - no mean feat in the face of so much opposition and ignorance!

Thank YOU for all your friendship, good humour and support these past 7 years, you are truly a Heroine of the Forum! 🙂

I haven't been on here very long at all. Huge words like support, encouragement and friendship are what seem to unite us all here. In my time here I have seen you dole out support, encouragementand friendship in great abundance to everybody. It only seems right then that you get a little from the rest of us. You certainly deserve it. Happy diaversary and many, many many more

Happy ( if that's the right word!) Diaversary, Alison.

Thank you Alison. In the relatively short time I've been part of this forum you've been warm, welcoming and extremely encouraging. I hope you know how much that means to someone like me.

Diabetes aside, think of all the new (virtual) friends you have made over the seven years. Yaaay

Alison, it is a pleasure having you on here - your story is an inspiration for others who have to fight to get the treatment they need. 🙂

Happy diaversary, Alison - I didn't know how much of a struggle you'd had to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. You're doing amazingly well now, most of us would really love such good control 🙂

You've offered a lot of wise words and support to others, long may it continue. Diabetes is a life sentence, still waiting to earn my parole 🙂

My diabetes education course was called 'Diabetes4Life' - now, you can either read that as telling you 'sorry mate, you're stuck with this for the remainder of your days', or 'life is for living, learn how to fit diabetes into it and get on with doing whatever you want to do'. I chose the latter, although I did point this out to them! 🙂

Always try to adopt the positive way but it's more difficult during testing times in general. However, according to all the evidence for a cure for diabetes, I WILL be up for parole in around 10 years 🙂
