Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
In an earlier series of posts a member speculated as to whether I might be type 1 rather than diagnosed type 2 because I am underweight. My weight is stable (still underweight and can’t put it on) but my BG (I’m on no medication) tends to be in 6s and 7s unless I eat a piece of cake(occasionally) when it goes up to 12. My question is would my BG measurements not be higher if I was type 1? Also as my GP does not want to put me on diabetes medication (for medical reasons) will having BGs in 6 and 7 range do me long term harm? Also is it safe to have a treat of a piece of cake (12 BG) once a week. I’m not due an Hb measurement until next spring.
Finally I note people often have their medicine details and Hb measurements at the bottom of their posts but I don’t know how to do this?
Thanks in anticipation of your replies.

Most likely, yes.

Not that much, I think. What has your HbA1c been like?

How often do you test @Hilary M ? You say you’re usually in the 6s and 7s but does that include 2 hours after a carby meal?

It certainly doesn’t seem like classic T1 @Hilary M

Two of the symptoms of T1 are increased urination leading to increased thirst - and this generally happens when BGs are above the renal threshold where the kidneys try to flush out excess glucose. This is usually BG averaging above 10mmol/L

However you seem to have what used to be called ‘impaired glucose tolerance’, where your BG rises more than would be expected in response to high/rapid carb loads

thank you to all who answered. My Hba1c was last taken in March when I was on 15mg of Prednisolone (not on steroids now) and was 57. I’m not due another test until March 22. At the time Hospital said was steroid induced diabetes. Wakening is usually between 6.7 to 7.3. Pre meal 6.5 to 7.2,2hour post meal between 6.9 to 8.9 (on a bad day )7.9 on a good day. My one sin, Fridays with 3 friends , latte and cheese scone today 11.3 - The one and only treat I have and I’m reluctant to give up. I think my question really is should I be pushing to be on medication. My preference is not to be because of existing medication but apart from the Friday scone I can’t see any more changes to diet I can make as already on very low carb and don’t want to fade away. (5’4, 46.5 kg). Interesting about impaired glucose tolerance. Is that different from pre diabetes? Thank you

Not really that is what Pre Diabetes was know as about 20 years ago.

Hi Hilary, I’ve been in a similar boat. I’m underweight always have been. Told I was type 2 which was quickly changed to type 1 after some tests. Did you have an antigad test or cpeptide do you know? if not maybe request these if you are unsure however my antigad pointed to type 1 and my c peptide to type 2. I’m prescribed insulin but I don’t take it as I’m much better with diet alone and my numbers are good. Steady 5-6 all day spiking up to 8-9 straight after food but always comes down within an hour or so (my diet is very low carb zero sweet stuff) I saw an endo once who told me there are your type 1’s and 2’s and a huge grey area in between. I don’t know what I am so for now I just tell people I’m allergic to carbs.

I can understand why you don’t want to lose any more weight @Hilary M Is the weight loss something recent or have you always been very slim? You say you can’t put weight on - have you tried using an app like MyFitnessPal or similar? When I want to put weight on or make sure I stay stable, I use the app. I found that just eating a few more calories allowed me to meet my calorie target each day and put weight on.

Can you give us an idea of an average day’s food for you? You’ll then get suggestions about tweaks that will add calories but not be too carb-heavy.
