Just ate a tin of heinz macaroni cheese plus three eggs scrambled no milk/butter, and a coffee milk plus two sugar. Finally got a glucose metre so am getting used to it. Waiting for yes or no diagnosis still in two weeks

Now 7.2

Hi Pamela, normally you would want to wait around an hour before testing after you have eaten, as you need to see when the digestion of your food causes your blood sugar levels to peak - not much will have digested after 15 minutes, and the variation is too small to be of much value as far as the test is concerned. Testing every 15 minutes will mean sore fingers very quickly! Have you read Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S ? (click on it to open the link)

Hi Pamela, how did the rest of your testing go? 🙂 Once you get into the swing of things the numbers will start to become more meaningful to you 🙂 If you're ever in any doubt, please ask 🙂

I tend to test after 2 hrs. Even non diabetics can spike in the first initial hour. I'm keen to see how my body is coping with it after 2.

Hope it goes well Pamela (but they are low levels anyway) 🙂

Hello I am new to testing too and have been testing two hours after meals. So far I am very pleased with the results.. have gone lower carb than before and cut out puddings cakes etc.. and today after fish (no batter) small amount of baked beans and about ten fish n chip shop chips my blood sugar was 6.8. After pasta and salmon salad (Rosemary Conley yellow portion pot of uncooked pasta) it was 9 which I think is a bit high ? But not as bad as I thought it would be. I am just testing once a day at the moment after different meals as even though I am diabetic (just) hba1c of 49 I haven't had a fasting blood over 6.7 I was diagnosed totally on the hba1c. I have a bad cold at the moment and thought that my blood sugar would be higher due to that but it does not appear to be so far!

Hi @Forgetful55, it's a good idea to test your levels before you eat, as well as after so you can see how many mmol/l the meal caused your levels to rise. Ideally, you are looking for a rise in levels on no more than 3 mmol/l 🙂

Hope you are feeling better very soon 🙂

Thanks Northener, I guess I should test twice really, new to it all but will get used to it soon I am sure. But I am really glad I got the meter . When I asked the diabetes nurse about testing she said No it would only worry you! My OH's Mum said I should not need a blood monitor yet (she is type two but on insulin now after 10 years) .. do not understand the NHS take on this telling everyone to eat loads of carbs and not to test your blood very strange! How are you meant to control it with diet if you don't know what food does to you! Been reading a lot especially the David Cavan books and the Gretchen Becker one I can recommend both to any newbies!
