I spoke to the senior DSN today and said that I had a HBA1C of 6.8. She said that would mean average BG of 5.0 . That's not right is it?

Don't really see how it could be - what's your 90-day average on your pump meter? There is an algorithm for converting these things - will have a look to see if I can find it. What would that make my average, given that my last HbA1c was 5.5%? 😱

Try this:

http://www.perinatology.com/calculators/HemoglobinA1C.htm

It says 8 mmol/l average, 6 mmol/l for mine.

Thanks Redkite and Northerner. That's what I thought because my average on the machine is 7.8/7.9 and I said this to the nurse - but she doesn't trust a machine average! The nurse claimed that with a HBA1C of 6.5 I would be running at an average of 5 and that would be causing the hypos!! I hope when my other nurse comes back tomorrow she realises that this isn't true.

I have just checked my 90-day average and it is 6.3 mmol/l for my HbA1c of 5.5%, so mine is of similar proportions. Out of 474 readings I had 42 hypos, most of them just below range (Standard Deviation was 1.7).

Thanks for that Northerner - further evidence for what I was saying. This nurse was talking at me and not listening to me. I would expect and accept a load of hypos if my average was that low (your control is excellent) - but it just doesn't make any sense for me about the sudden changes and this nurse today was just so unhelpful. I know that I'm particularly anxious to find out if there is a specific cause after how long I suffered with the gastroparesis before it was diagnosed - and I don't want to go through that again. I'm not doing hardly anything physical in order to prevent problems with low sugars. Hopefully it will stabilise over the next few days.
