The European analysis published recently in Diabetes Care demonstrated that the protocol for pilots with insulin-treated diabetes that is currently being used by the U.K., Ireland and Austria is “practical and feasible to operate and has performed well,” with no reports of pilot incapacitation during flights. The data show that individuals with insulin-dependent diabetes can safely pilot commercial aircraft, as long as they follow strict protocols and are working with a co-pilot who understands and recognises their condition and is ready to intervene in the setting of an emergency.
