can you get a normal full licence when you are no longer classed has diabetic after having gastric bypass two years ago, and not had insulin or tablets since.

Hi Papillon, welcome to this friendly and extraordinarily helpful forum.🙂

I think the answer to your question is best answered by the DVLA. It’s great news that no medication is needed now, for sure. I think our pals who are controlled on diet alone might have a definitive answer. I’m sure they’ll be along soon.

Keep in touch🙂

Hello Papillon

Welcome to the forum

I wonder if the DUK helpline might also be able to offer advice. Or possibly your GP? (If the DVLA prove hard to get hold of!)

0345 123 2399 or email helpline@diabetes.org.uk.

I think your Gp has to send confirmation that you are still fit to drive as part of the 3 year renewal (though I’m not sure if this has to happen for every case?) so it may be that they are also involved in any possible switch back to a non-restricted license?

Welcome Papillion. That's an interesting one. I think only them can tell you. If it where me you would have your it back. Good luck 🙂

you would think that now you no-longer have the treatment then necessitated a medical licence you should be able to go back to a full length one but knowing the DLVA it would not surprise me if they keep you on one.
as others have suggested you should really call the DVLA for advise & probably complete another Diab1 form.
I have just been put on a medical licence myself, can you advise what is the process for renewal & do they charge?

They send us the forms about 3 months before the licence expires Alister so plenty of time to send them back - although you can now renew online. Mine was due on 28 June I think however because they looked at it whenever (April I think) my new licence runs from a date in April to the same date in June that it originally expired, in 2021. Doesn't expire at age 70 for me, as I only have a 'under 3500kgs' licence now.

If you have your C1, that would still expire at age 70 diabetes or not, then non diabetic you have to have a medical every 3 years thereafter anyway. If you are licensed to drive heavier vehicles, PSVs or different things, they each have their own requirements anyway, and all different from 'just cars'. I might still be able to tow more than you anyway cos these days you don't automatically get all the categories all us old uns did when we passed our tests.

I'm an 'oldun' as well so still have entitlement to tow (class BE) just nothing above 3500kg & no mini buses any more

They didn't send me a reminder. I've tonight discovered I have been driving for 15 months without a license. I fly tomorrow and have hired a car. Absolute disaster. I'm not a happy bunny. Why do they have to make everything so damn difficult!

Have the DVLA got your correct address? It's quite easy to move and forget to tell them. I have (or at least was until 1.5 years ago) been driving all the time I have been diabetic (32 years) and have always received a reminder. I've moved addresses several times during that period. Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Yes, I've lived here for 21 years and they've always sent my renewals here. I really don't understand, when I get the renewal it always goes back immediately. I didn't even think to check it when I booked the car, I just went cold when I pulled it out and saw the date. :(

Moving house and not telling the DVLA can land you with a £1000 fine. It’s an offence in law.
