It's the carbs you need to be aware of not the sugars 🙂

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum!

It's the total carbs that you need to look at. All carbs turn into sugars in your digestive system anyway and therefore all will affect your blood sugar.

It always annoys me on bought foods that "sugars" is always emblazoned all over the front of packets but to find the total carbs you usually have to hunt around on the back. Actually the sugars info on its own is completely useless, whether you are diabetic or not - I just wish someone could explain this to the food industry!!

Welcome to the forum, jimw. Which book do you mean? Could you give a URL, so we know which one. As Sue has mentioned, total carbohydrate content is important, especially for people who match their insulin dose to CHO content, although sugar content is also useful.
