Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hey,

Someone told me if you took 300 units of humalog all at once something really bad would happen, i was wondering if anyone could tell me if this was true?

Also, 300 is like 2 and a half cartridges, im diabetic and that sounds painful to inject all at once. do u think they meant over the space of half an hour or so?

How would they mean?

That is a lot of insulin 😱 Some people do require large insulin doses if they have high insulin resistance, but I have never heard of such a high dose. Who said this to you and what did they say would happen?

Hi Alice.

Are you having problems at the moment ?

ROb

My brother (who is on the slightly large side) was taking 300 units dailly for many years.

but a strange question.

Most type 1s (or type 2s on insulin) can have widely varied doses, depending on body size, level of activity, stress, etc.

What's your normal doses ?

Rob

would that be normal for someone smallish? i was just wondering, did your brother do this over his 3 injections?

Alice, I'm just a bit concerned why you are wanting to know this. Insulin can be dangerous if it is the wrong dose for the person, but that is true of many things. Do you mind me asking how old you are?

Yes he did, the main factors on how much is size, resistance and of course diet. he was 20 odd stone and could eat like nobody else I have ever met. He was like it for years from a very young age and paid little attention to the fact he was a diabetic. He is now around 15 stone and due to him losing his driving licence cyles everywhere which is helping him a lot.

Oh and at the grand old age of 45 he has just annouced he is going to be a father.

There is hope for everybody, if he can do it ANYBODY can.

ETA is there any special reason for this type of question?

i usually take something between 5 and 12 units of humalog before each meal depending on its size and things then 20 units of lantus once a day, this is why 300 sounds so much

Some people have what is known as insulin resistance, and need much higher doses than other people. Actually, you take a lot of lantus compared to me - I only take 2 units!

It would sound alot to most people, there was a man on my dafne course (carb counting) that was injection 84 units of lantus every eveing in one go.😱 he said it stings a little lol, the dafne DSN soon changed that though.

Those doses are similar to what I take, but Northerner is a lot more active than I am ! 😱

Many people say a lot of strange things about insulin and diabetes because they don't understand the relationship we have with our condition/illness and how we come to terms with it. They maybe see it like having a broken leg and think insulin is a way of fixing it.

We know different.🙂

Why has this topic interested you particularly alice ?

If someone said it to me, I'd be inclined to just dismiss it.

It's not impossible. I am getting more curious as to your question though as it seems to be going beyong idle curiosity.
