I didn't get one!
Worse still, I've been driving without a valid license for 15 months.
Even worse still, I only found out because I'm flying tomorrow and have hired a car.
I'm now a bit of a blithering mess. I've applied now online, but I don't have a license to pick up the car at out destination tomorrow. Just beside myself. How hard do they have to make things?

Sorry Chelle, they haven't made it hard whatsoever. They've most likely done what they always did - but for whatever reason you haven't received their reminder, which is not their fault because it's always been perfectly clear that our licences only last 3 years'

The problem is that you didn't check why you hadn't received a reminder or even looked at your licence during the past 15 months - and you can't blame that on anyone but yourself I'm afraid.

Yes, I agree it's partially my fault, though I don't see how they are blameless. The website absolutely says "You'll be sent a reminder 90 days before your license runs out." Clearly this didn't happen!
Along with everything else we are trying to juggle, do we absolutely know when our license runs out? How many people have to take their license out just to check it? Normally it's not looked at unless we need to use it, which is what happened in this case. This is why it's so important DVLA get it right. Not so difficult if it's a yearly renewal but not so easy to keep track of a 3 yearly renewal.
In hindsight when I booked the car, I should have checked my license but I didn't even think about it because up until now I have always received a reminder.

How do you know they haven't sent it? That is all they promise to do - good grief, with the number of UK licence holders - many of them with short period licences for various reasons be they medical (eg HGV licences need a yearly medical) or age related - they could hardly double check with individuals to make sure they've received them nor in the case on non renewal - you could have moved to Timbuctu or indeed popped your clogs etc.

When booking the holiday - did you perchance glance at everyone's passport to ensure they all expire in more than 6 months or whatever it is where you're going ? - I had to renew mine early once because expiry was just outside the time limit required - can't recall now whether that was India, the Dom Repub, Oz or the USA.

Quite handy now as mine is due in years ending with 0 and Pete's in those ending with 5, hence the expense is only 5 yearly. However, although every 3 years for both of us now - not the same year - but he'll actually need a medical every time if he still wants to keep his C1 - and mine ain't cos I didn't bother keeping it.
