Hi Everyone, im new to all of this so hope im posting in the right area. Basically my 3 year old was showing signs of a UTI saying it hurts when she pees, constant thirst and frequent urination. So I took her to the Dr who dip sticked her urine and yes she has an infection but more worryingly it had a strong positive for glucose. They dipped it 3 times to be sure - 2 were strong positives and the other not as strong but still there. Shes had blood tests before for something else and it showed her blood sugars were 8 so was retested again and came back at 6.2 so nothing else was done (meant to be under 7 apparently?) but now the sugar is showing in her urine. The Dr wants to retest her urine again in a week but I cant stop thinking and worrying about it all. Im all abit confused by it all. Any help and advise would be appreciated.

Hi Mrs Cook, welcome to the forum 🙂 I think you are right to be worried. If glucose is showing in the urine then this suggests that it is certainly higher than is normal - I think the normal lower threshold for this to happen is when blood sugar levels are around 10 mmol/l. It may be higher as she is fighting an infection, so may indeed be temporary. I don't understand why the doctor isn't doing fingerprick blood tests as these are more reliable and accurate than urine testing. I wouldn't personally wait a week, I would get an earlier appointment and ask for a fasting blood test to be done. You say she has had blood tests before - when was this?

The first one that came back at 8 was 14th June and the re-test was 5th July 2016 so not long ago. I suggested the finger prick test and she said she didn't want to put her through that! I said it was ok as shes had her pre-school injections the week before and didn't batter an eyelid but they just said see you in a week.
She also hadn't eaten anything since lunch at 12.30 which was a ham and cheese wrap, grapes, babybel and yoghurt then her appointment was 4.20 so wasn't as if she had just eaten. Does an infection cause sugars to go high then?

I think they are being very remiss in not doing a fingerprick test, especially if she wouldn't mind it too much :( I'm not a doctor, but infections do make the body work harder and can raise levels significantly when you have a problem with your pancreas, as I do. I would be persistent and get the blood test - much better safe than sorry and I'm afraid to say that some healthcare professionals can be a little too laid back. I think they need to absolutely rule out Type 1 diabetes to the satisfaction of all, not just 'wait and see'. Things can deteriorate very quickly, as has been the experience of several of our members with their own children.

What are your thoughts on her previous 2 blood tests coming back at 8 and then 6.2? I don't want to seem like im over reacting by taking her to A&E or something but cant help and worry with this latest urine test. Ive read elsewhere on this forum that a positive urine test should has sent us straight to hospital so don't even want to go back to the GP!

Keep in touch with your GP and look out for other symptoms which often occur in children when they develop type 1 diabetes: tiredness, weight loss, frequent urination, itchy genitals etc see http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Diabetes-type1/Pages/Symptoms.aspx If worried, then get yourself to A&E or GP immediately.

Do let us know how things have progressed.

I know there's lots of media attention about not going to A&E but if you're worried or she seems to be getting worse then take her. It doesn't matter a jot if it turns out to be nothing. I personally would take her back to the GP and insist they do a finger prick test, a good number of GPs are not fully aware of how quickly type 1 develops in children and for my own peace of mind I'd want to be sure. Where diabetes is suspected in kids it's always better safe than sorry. I hope she's feeling a wee bit better, let us know how you get on.

Hi MrsCook, Welcome. I can only guess how worried you must be. Personally I cannot understand why that GP didn't do a fingerprick test. As other people here have already said , if your daughter seems to get worse or you are worried then take her to A&E
Please let us know how you get on.

Is she now on an antibiotic?
A kidney infection can spill glucose in to the urine too. I wouldn't jump to T1, but she needs proper care and diagnosis.

Thank you all for your replies - shes on antibiotics for her UTI yes so that's why the Dr wants to see her in a week when shes finished that and to see if the glucose has gone probably thinking that the kidney infection is causing it but its going to be the longest week of my life! It wouldn't of taken her a minute to prick her finger and put my mind at rest! I just don't know what to think at the moment.

So I took her back to the Dr - glucose in wee has gone and finger prick test was 8? He said that's totally fine and she doesn't have diabetes.

Is she feeling better now? I hope so 🙂 How long before the test had she eaten? It's a little on the high side, but not alarmingly so.
