Hi,

I'm looking at buying a Movano van to convert into a camper. It's a 3.5 ton van. Does this mean it already weighs 3.5 tonnes unladen, or does this include its maximum payload weight? I'm restricted to 3.5 ton and under with my type 2 diabetes with insulin, so if the van is 3.5 ton BEFORE it's loaded, then I won't be able to drive it. Anyone know? Thaks

Hello, I believe this is the gross maximum weight the vehicle is allowed with a “payload?”
You should be able to get a “kerb weight” (meaning empty “stock” vehicle off the production line, no passengers with a full tank of fuel.) looking up the specifications of the vehicle?

I believe that gross vehicle weight is calculated by adding up the weight of a vehicle with a full tank of fuel, all necessary fluids, as well as the weight of the driver, passengers and luggage. If so, anything you add by converting it into a camper would be on top of that. You could always ask Vauxhall for advice?

I know that the VW LT46 6 wheeler I drive was downplated and the inside is quite lightweight as a result. It has no inbuilt water tanks or anything which would take it over the weight limit for it being drivable on a B1 licence. I used to have a C1 class on my licence but when I reached 70 it evaporated.
There are sites on facebook for self build campers where there is all sorts of advice, some of it sarcastic, some of it shocked rigid at the dangerous work done - there might be some help on them, and also if you search online for the rules and regulations covering such things.
