Hi, I had my 2nd appointment with the diabetes nurse yesterday and she was really pleased with my readings. Before meals I average around 5.5 and 2 hours after it is usually 6.5(ish). I admitted to all the additional testing I have been doing (she advised twice daily before meals) and that I had bought some additional testing strips from ebay. I also admitted that I have been going some way to low carbing (against her initial advice) and having no carbs with breakfast. I was amazed when she said she was happy for me to reduce carbs if that was what I wanted but advised me to watch out for fat content (my cholesterol was 4.6 when tested a couple of months ago). She also told me that for now, as I am new and keen to test after meals there is no need for me to purchase additional testing strips - she will prescribe them for me!!

I came away from the appointment feeling very positive, feeling that she understands how seriously I want to find the best way to control this and find a way that it does not intrude into my life too much. I have read such horror stories on here about the lack of knowledge and support of some GPs and their staff, and consider myself very lucky to have the level of support I seem to be getting.

I did find out yesterday the results of my glucose tolerance test. Apparently my reading after 2 hours was 13. Other than this test I have only ever had fasting blood tests done, which have come out ranging from 6.3 to 7.6. From the limited information I know I am not sure if these readings are particularly high or only just in the diabetic range? Should I be trying to get my daily readings lower or are the figures I am getting ok or just ok for a newbie? I can hardly wait to have my hba1c reading taken in September as I feel this will give me either a pat on the back or a kick up the derriere!

Is it normal to feel this obsessive in the beginning? x

Well done with your efforts. Impressed you got an appointment on a Saturday. Just shows that some diabetes specialists are happy to adjust prescription amounts IF shown how results are being used and happy to adjust advice regarding diet - often they are reluctant to advise low carb diet, because that often (but not necessarily) becomes higher fat.

How to interpret glucose tolerance test results here: http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/Glucose-Tolerance-Tests.htm

No-one with established diabetes on treatment - whether diet & exercise / oral medication / injected medication - is given an oral glucose tolerance test (at least not intentionally!) so a bit difficult to answer you question about "only just is diabetic range"

Great that you are getting such support and understanding from your nurse! 🙂 People are diagnosed with diabetes if they have a fasting BG over 7 mmol/l or GTT shows over 11 mmol/l. You weren't too far above this, and your fingerprick tests suggest that your body is capable of good control with the right diet/exercise - those readings are pretty much perfect! Of course, the GTT shows what would happen if you were to have some fast sugar (or white bread!) - your levels would climb faster than your pancreas' ability to respond with insulin. This is why it shouldn't be said that you are 'cured' if you are getting non-diabetic levels - but you do have it under control 🙂

Well done!

Hi Shevicks nice to hear your feeling so positive, like copepod already stated im impressed you got an appointment on a Saturday.

Really good progress well done

well done excellent results ...ive got a good gp/DSN as well it certainly helps xx

Looks like you are getting great results and have the support of a good DSN. I think her approach is how things should work, if you show how you are using the results then you should have access to test strips when new to diabetes.

The finger prick results you are getting are within the NICE targets for type 2 so you are doing well. The better you can get your control now the better for the future, as there is a legacy effect of initial good control. Did you discuss a HbA1c target with your DSN?

Keep up the good work

Well done on your levels 🙂
