29 year old struggling with type2 diabetes control

Hello,

My name is Michael and I’m 29 years old oil and gas worker in Scotland. I was diagnosed in 2013 with type 2 diabetes and after some time they diagnosed me type 1.

The doctors then had me back to say they diagnosed me wrong due to me only being able to put 1 unit of insulin into my body a day and still have hypos even if I ate sweet c**p food all day. (Sorry for the language)

I’m now struggling to control my diabetes, my mmol levels are between the 10-15 mark and I need to get them down by June or my company doctor is going to take away my medical certificate.

I’m looking for advice on the correct things to eat. Like what I should stay away from and what is good but keeps me full for longer. And will help take my hba1c to normal. As quick as possible.

Hi, welcome to the club no one wants to join! All you need to know is on these pages, the diet approach is to reduce carbohydrates as these are exactly the same for our body as obvious sugars, especially pasta, rice, potatoes and bread, beware also of too much fruit as that is naturally high in sugar, the rule of thumb is only two small pieces a day.
Keeping a food diary to start with is key, ideally you would test your blood before you eat and then again 2 hours after and look for a raise of no more than two, otherwise adapt and try again, eventually you will learn what foods work best for you.
My advice would be to go make a cuppa, get comfy and read as much as you can on here, then ask whatever questions you have, no such thing as a daft question and we do try our best not to give a daft answer :confused:

If you were diagnosed with T1, do your u know what tests they did to confirm this?
Having a hypo happens with T1 if the doses are not right. I started on tiny doses, and had a child’s half unit pen so that I could give small amounts. There are people in here who are T1 and have tiny doses of insulin as they still have some Beta cells that have not been destroyed. They are still T1, and often have to gradually increase their dose as their pancreas gradually loses more Beta cells. I would suggest that your u go back and ask more questions.

Whatever type of diabetes you have remember that it is any carbs that is going to increase your glucose levels. The press compound the myth that it is ‘sugar’ that is the problem, whereas we need to be aware of any carbs, including pasta, potatoes and rice. I like the simple idea with regard to veg of anything that grows under the ground (parsnips, potatoes) is high carb, things that grow above the ground (peas, beans) are medium carbs, and things that grow on the ground (lettuce) are extremely low. That gives me a good guide.
