Hi everyone,
So glad I found this forum with all you lovely people.
Got my results today and got a reading of 57 and told over the phone I have t2d! Haven't spoken to a dr yet, hoping to get an appointment tomorrow.
Feeling very overwhelmed, already take meds for high bp, anxiety and depression I smoke and now I've got this I feel like I can't see a way out! I'm so scared about what it means for me in the future and I just can't see a way out of this feeling.
I kind of feel worthless already and can't imagine being happy and healthy again.
I have just started an NHS weight management course with hope of getting WLS and I'm not sure how t2d will affect my chances, I feel like I can't wait two years for the op because another two years of this is unbearable!
Sorry for the long post, feel like I'm able to rant a little bit on here with the hope somebody out there might know how I'm feeling. I'm looking forward to try and help support everybody else also x

Hi Sarah, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis :( Fortunately, from your reading of 57, it suggests that they have detected the problem early, so try not to worry. I don't agree that someone should be told such a thing over the phone, that is very poor :(

You sound like you have a lot to deal with already, but it may be that by working to bring your blood sugar levels under control it will help you improve your health in other areas. By no means should you feel you are worthless, or that there is no way out, this is perfectly possible with help and support 🙂 Higher than normal, or fluctuating blood sugar levels can significantly affect your mood and energy levels, so hopefully better control of this will help to stabilise your mood also. Also, please don't feel that you need to immediately change everything at once - you are in no imminent danger from your diagnosis and should take your time to try an understand and absorb things. Better to make small, sustainable changes than being overwhelmed by everything. We are here to help you with any questions and concerns you may have, so never be afraid to ask 🙂

The good news is that, although a serious condition, diabetes is something that can be managed well. Many people find that, once they understand things and make the necessary adaptations, they start to feel happier and healthier than they have for a long time - no reason why you can't enjoy life to the full! 🙂

I would suggest reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. There's a lot of information there, so take your time, and let us know if anything doesn't make sense to you. I'd also suggest getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which is a really helpful and positive guide to the early months 🙂

I hope that you manage to get an early appointment - please let us know if you have any questions beforehand, and let us know how you get on 🙂 If you have someone who can go along with you, that may help as there is often a lot of information thrown at you and another pair of ears might remember things you forget 🙂

Good luck, and don't worry - I hope to hear more from you soon 🙂

Welcome to the forum Sarah 🙂. Sorry to hear about your health issues, but you are NOT worthless! Depression can lead to a vicious circle of unhealthy lifestyle leading to poorer health. The good news is you can do plenty to help yourself, but set yourself small goals, one step at a time. {{{hugs}}}

Welcome to the forum, Sarah. You have come to the right place for support. You will find loads of good advice and tips as well as encouragement to help you on your way. 🙂

Welcome, Sarah. One thing you can do now is stop smoking and start vaping. You won't notice any difference in your need for nicotine, but you will feel better almost instantly. And once you have done that, you have scored a win in your effort at turning things around, and that will make you feel better in yourself as well.

As I said, if you can manage that, everything else will seem more doable. Keep in touch, and let us know how you get on.

Good advice from everyone and I heartily endorse what @mikeyB said about vaping. Massive gain for minimum effort.

Hi Sarah and a big welcome.
It's great you've found this forum as you'll get lots of friendly support. Just keep reading the threads and ask any questions. Also let us know how you're doing 🙂
