Hi all.

I'm just looking for advice (have a gp appt booked)

I'm 28 and relatively healthy, a veggie and go to the gym 3-4 times a week. Recently I've been weeing alot more than usual and have just felt... Off.

I tested my blood sugar as I know weeing alot can be a symptom (used my grandads monitor!) And a random finger prick at 6pm at night came back at 5.7

I did it the next morning around 6.30am and it was 7!! I retested 15 mins later and it was 5.1 - does this sound like type 2?

Usually my blood sugar sits around 4-5 so the 7 was scary to see! Have never been diagnosed with diabetes but have tested on occasion with my grandads very worried - any advice what I can do until I get appt? (Will be a good month before I'm seen)

Thanks all!

If your test 5 minutes later was back down to 5.1, it sounds like the 7 was just a meter anomaly.
They have to comply to a standard to be with 15% of accuracy 95% of the time. Plus you may have had something on your finger.
The advice for those of us with diabetes is "if you meter gives you a number you don't expect, wash your hands and try again."

So, with the caveat that I am not a doctor, I do not think you have anything to worry about from a diabetes perspective.

Is this something that has suddenly happened as if so it could be a urinary tract infection.
Do you drink a lot of caffeine containing drinks as you could have a sensitive bladder which can be irritated by caffeine.
The results from the monitor look normal but wise to get checked out by your GP.

Hello,

It’s great you’ve got an appointment booked with your GP. The two or three random tests done on your granddad’s meter are not extra ordinary as BGs go.

You are better off waiting till you see a doctor who is capable of getting some lab tests done?

Good luck, let us know how you got on.

Welcome to the forum @28andconcerned

Try not to worry too much. I agree with @helli - meters for home use are great for managing diabetes once you have a diagnosis, but they aren’t really designed for diagnostic use.

They have an allowable margin of error, and that can make exactly the same drop of blood appear to give 2 different results - so they are a bit more ‘ish’ than their decimal point displays would suggest.

If your GP is concerned they may get an HbA1c check done, which is a measure of glucose levels over the past 3-4 months and os a much more robust diagnostic measure as it’s less prone to odd wobbles here and there 🙂

Let us know how you get on 🙂
