More than 22,000 patients are to be recalled for tests to see if they have been infected with blood-borne viruses, which could include HIV, amid concerns over a dentist who treated patients in the Nottingham area.

NHS England said it will announce a "significant patient recall" of people to be tested – believed to be the biggest ever in UK medical history.

Blood-borne viruses include HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

The recall has been sparked over concerns the dentist who treated patients in Nottingham over a 32-year period, did not follow proper procedures, The Mirror has reported.

The paper said the dentist, who has not been named, was suspended in June after being filmed by a whistleblower while allegedly breaching infection-control standards.
