Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello, I've just joined the forum. Diagnosed type 1 in 2001 at the age of 26. Control has been sliding for a number of years. Could be worse, but definitely could be improved.
So far free of complications apart from background retinopathy, which was picked up right from the start but thankfully not progressed.
I'm an enthusiastic ultra marathon and endurance runner, to which controlling BG adds an interesting challenge!
Started on Freestyle Libre 2 last week. It's a game changer which has rekindled my motivation to get better control.

Welcome to the forum @iharding

Good to have you on here with all your experience, and I hope that you find the wealth of experience that you can draw on useful.

As you say the Libre or other cams are an absolute game changer and show us what is happening in between those finger pricks. I used mine at the start to
- improve the timing of my bolus injections with a different time delay needed at different times of the day
- help with exercise as it Was easy to check in between games without delaying things and I headed off any hypos
- learn that some foods were just too spiky to bother with for me
-avoid issues with delays to driving as I checked 45 minutes before I needed to leave and took any necessary action in good time to head off any problems.
It Is great that the use has already motivated you to make some improvements to your management.

If you are happy to do so could you tell us how you manage your T1
Which insulin(s) you use
pump or MDI

Keep in touch and I look forward to hearing more from you.

Thank you for the welcome!

I'm on MDI. After a brief and frustrating introduction on Humalog pre-mix I did some research and moved on to Humalog and Hypurin Bovine Lente after a few weeks and an argument with a DSN who was deeply alarmed about trusting information from the internet. We parted ways after that 🙂
Only change has been a move to Lantus after Hypurin was discontinued.
I got used to carb counting early on armed with a copy of the USDA foods database on a Palm Pilot, which was the only electronic source of data at the time, and a rudimentary logging app. Moved on to some much more capable phone apps since.

Libre 2 is game changer, as athlete a pump would also be game changer for you, ability to reduce or stop basal insulin surely would be helpful.

Welcome to the forum @iharding

Great to hear that Libre2 is rekindling your diabetes mojo. It can be quite a relentless and wearying journey over the decades, and sometimes life just takes over for a while - but it’s great that you are looking to get to grips with things again.

Have you ever been on a structured education course like DAFNE or BERTIE? Do you carb count as part of your diabetes management?

We discussed Libre and a pump in the last DSN appointment. The Libre referral happened, but heard nothing more about the pump. If anything, my BG during training is better than at other times simply because I can't afford it not to be which forces me to focus. Some training runs can be over three hours, and events anything from 8 up to 24, so I've had to learn how to adjust for regular food intake without going hypo. That said, I am very open to trying a pump, which along with the data from the Libre is going to take things to a new level.

Keep asking about pump, they really do take things to another level.
