Hundreds of thousands of patients may have stopped taking statins because of widespread media coverage of controversy over the drugs’ risks and benefits, a study in the BMJ has claimed.

The UK researchers estimated that an extra 200,000 stopped statin therapy in the six months after a period of intense media coverage on the topic, which coincided with NICE plans to widen statin use for primary prevention in low-risk people.

They said that this could lead to around 2,000 more heart attacks and strokes within 10 years than would have been expected if the usual statin discontinuation rates had been maintained.

I heard a guy talking on the radio advocate statin use, it sounded like he had hereditary high cholesterol which is different to be being on it because of a theoretical risk because of other conditions you have. He was suggesting try different one till you find ones that suit.
I nearly throw the radio out the door!
I personally tried 3-4 different ones and they all made me ache that restricted my movements, and mine was only borderline!

It's about as reliable as the info available to inform our choice on the EU vote really 'there MAY be' more cardiac events. However - - there MAY not be of course - but we won't know that until 10 years have passed!

This being the case - how can you tell me that there is proof I need to take them?

But in any case @grovesy - since you and I both had side effects from the B things - neither of us will ever let one pass our lips again anyway - so it's immaterial! LOL

Exactly and I have a new GP to the practise just over 2 years ago , I thought I might have to argue my corner but she did not even to discuss ! My recent readings have been on the good side anyway! My Diabetic Nurse who retired at the beginning of the year told me in a discussion we had a few years ago that she had too many patients complain about the side effects, to ignore!
It is my body and I have made an informed choice!
