Just caught a news story about research from Bath University which showed significant improvement in insulin function with just 40 seconds of intense physical activity a week. More effective it seems than an hour of moderate exertion.

Will try to find more details...

Ha! Thanks Alan. Must learn to check the news section more frequently 🙂

Very interesting. So presumably, a 100 metre sprint would be as effective as an hour's brisk walking.

I suspect I may need oxygen and a week in bed, but the theory sounds good. :D

It's on sky news now with some woman talking a crock of poop!

Is it just me or does every article I've read thus far concerning diabetes have to mention the 'costs the NHS ?1m an hour' line? That's sensationalism for you. 🙄

You'll get used to feeling like a personal drain on the country.🙄

But after a while, you'll also stop giving a damn and just feel sorry for the ones who believe it all. 😉

To be honest I'm already there, I've too much on my plate at the moment with all the adjustments I have to make to give any thought to brain dead ninnys on their high horses.

Well done that man ! :D

Whatever we get, we need. And it's all received with thanks. I'm sure Ive cost the NHS thousands and I plan to squeeze plenty more out of them for a long time to come. But I can sleep soundly and don't mind telling any DM readers what would happen if they tried to do things more cheaply.😛

As encouraging as this news is for those who find exercise difficult the article is sending out mixed messages, surely the more exercise you can manage the better it is for overall health and not just diabetes prevention.

Agreed, the article does mention 'This type of exercise is not suitable for weight loss as the sprints are too short to burn many calories' but I've always thought the basis of good exercise was to burn calories, isn't that the point? If this regime can improve general health as the article claims, where is the benefits if there is no weight loss?

My take on it is that this strenuous exercise (anaerobic?) is more to do with increasing fitness.

If you want to lose weight (and thereby reduce the amount of fat surrounding the internal organs, which I understood was heavily related to the levels of insulin resistance) then consistent reasonable vigorous exercise was required (i.e. enough to raise the heart rate and breathing but still able to hold a conversation).

It did the job for me!

Andy 🙂

It made the headlines in the Express today, they are always first with the cr*p, but right at the end of their article they do say it was a very small sample and that they didn't have diabetes.:(

I was interested in what this guy had to say, a link from the David Mendosa site, all seemed very plausable until I saw he was selling a book at the end of it. Wasn't so sure then.
Basically it says forget the short gym type exercises and train like an athlete.
