2 weeks in and eyesight problems

Well Im 2 weeks in, metaformin twice daily (going up to 3 this week) and levels coming down nicely - from 20 to currently stable at between 9 & 12. Had a wobble last week when on a 6 mile fast walk and felt really dizzy and self tested and levels had dropped from 12 to 7 so a couple of glucose tablets later I was fine. I love my walking and a jog round the block a couple of times a week but doc said to hold off the jogging till levels are more stable - which is annoying as I just wanna get back to my Zumba and my jogs. However eyesight has been an issue. So blurry for over a week been to opticians and he said it's the drop in glucose levels. Said the high levels have been masking the true state of my eyes. So now have glasses and I can see again!! Keep remembering one step at a time. Have had a bad couple of days on the food as it's been half term and Halloween so I've had a handful of haribos and some cake these past few days. Its all about self control. But it's a lifestyle change.
 
Unfortunately, once you adjust to the lower levels of glucose in your body, the glasses will probably be useless - and the optician should have known that and not taken your money.
There was most likely no need for glucose tablets, just a sit down and a warm drink would probably have sorted your wobbles out - it is called a false hypo, as your body is used to higher levels of glucose and so sent out distress signals. I usually consider a reading of 7 to be high, now I am two years from diagnosis.
The Haribos and cake would have done you no favours - keeping your body hopeful for more carbs just prolongs the cravings - Having low carb foods always on hand does help a lot to avoid temptations.
The advice from your doctor is strange - exercise helps to lower blood glucose when combined with low carb foods it is really effective - how being stable comes into the picture I can't quite fathom - low and stable good - high and stable - er.....
It really does get better, and it is good that you can take the Metformin without side effects - I suffered some really embarrassing incidents taking Metformin. I gave it up, but don't need it. I feel great these days and have normal numbers - so no problems.

Hi @Caz73. You are doing well, your levels are coming down nicely!

@Drummer is right it will get better as will your eyes, that optician should know better and should have advised you to wait a while before buying new glasses as it’s very likely your sight will not be blurry in a few weeks time, it’s just that as your glucose levels are starting to come down your eyes need time to return to normal , they will catch up , honest !
TBH I would go to a different optician in future.
My sight improved so much I only need reading glasses.

Your brain also needs time to adapt to lower BG levels, it’s been running on high octane fuel for some time now and is not used to normal levels of glucose. So it sent out panic signals, Whether they are false or real, hypo’s are horrid, but false hypo’s are not in the least dangerous 🙂 , sometimes we can alleviate false hypo symptoms by eating a low carb snack, eating high carb snacks are likely to prolong you having them.
It’s sure is a steep learning curve isn’t it 🙂 don’t worry you’ll get there .
Basically 4.0 and below is hypo territory.

If I were you till your body was more used to lower levels I would cut down a bit on exercise and carry some nice low carb snacks with you so that if you have another false hypo you can sit and rest and hopefully fool your brain that all is well because you’ve eaten something.

Hi Lin thank you for your advice yeah I needed my glasses short term as my eyes were quite bad I couldn't read anything so I needed them to be able to go back to work and be able to drive. I only bought some cheap frames £25 as I knew they would change again.

Its such a minefield getting your body used to the drop in blood sugar's but already I feel so much better but I guess that's because I've been eating better too. But with Christmas coming up its gonna be hard work! Determined to get on top of this though. Thanks again x
 
Many of us relax our grip a bit on the day, same forbirthdays and other special occasions, before I went on insulin I used to, now I’m on insulin I’m a bit more naughty on the day 😱:D
Fill up on the protein, veggies as for the roast potatoes, stuffing, mince pie and choccy etc have them but control potion size after all It’s only one day out of many , but ignore those who say “oh come on one more won’t hurt you” when you really know you’ve been a bit too naughty.

In the lead up to Christmas, staff parties etc, if it’s a buffet, often the filling is much healthier for us than what surrounds it.

One thing you always need to watch for when out, is that that diet drink is actually a diet drink, I’ve been caught out like this myself , my supposed Diet Coke served up in a glass and once from a self serve machine was in fact full fat Coke. I believe you can use your glucose meter to check by dipping the strip in the drink rather than a blood sample. now I only accept drinks if it comes in a can or bottle.
 
All good advice thank you my work meal is at a pizza place which is going to be hard then out for drinks but I'm of the mindset that if I'm good leading up to it then I can let loose for one night. Buffets are hard work as I love them but as hubby is coeliac and me now diabetic it's going to be a bit different for us. Ooh one more question how long can you leave between Metformin doses? Thanks again for the advice. X
