Glad to hear session 2 was as useful Steff, seems like this course is very foucessed around diet? or will they cover stuff like medications, complications and things like that?

Yes in week 4 we cover mediacation and long term complications.

Steff thanks for this, i'm waiting to go on mine....
Sounds very informative, looking forward to mine, when i get my appt.

That all sounds really good. I hope they get around to running one in Northampton...ummmm, question and answer sesssion at "Diabetics Anon" next week (ok, Diabetes UK Northampton branch....) i might ask the experts if there are any plans. It sounds better and more in depth than DESMOND, which to be honest, didn't teach me much. Any information is good if you ask me, especially when you've got a GP like Dr Twit...

Go Steff

Good luck. Go forth and learn.
Remember, have fun.
Also remember that you now are definitely living a healthier lifestyle (than you were probably living before).
So take advantage of the information they throw your way!

Hi all thats session 3 out of the way, it was as good as the rest lol, carb awareness and food labels we did a quiz then we broke down all the diffirent things that are on the back of food labels fat content salt etc it was really interesting finding out our daily allowance and just how many food go over that daily amount .Next week we all meet at tesco which is great for me as it saves on bus fare as its ust up the road, we all meet at the main entrence and off we go..

glad you managed to get there Steff. Are you finding that you knew alot of things already or is there alot of new information?

Steff i have the carb counter book but can't for the life of me understand it.
I don't even know how many carbs per day i'm suposed to have.
Trip to the supper market side of things will help me the most.
Lables are even more confusing lol
Glad your learning from all of this.
I look forward to reading about your next session.
When i start mine i will have to do the same to see how differently things are run here.
Thank you for the interesting read.

women are recommmended to have 130g
men are recommeded to have 180g
but it depends upon how active a person is they worked out for a guy in my session he was having 210g but that was ok as he is active and goes to the gym etc etc

Thanks for that info steff, much apreciated.

Hiya well sessions 4 was the supermarket tour we went around the local tesco extra it is massive , we went down all the relative isles asked questions for example i asked about marmite and she said not to have alot cause it is so high in salt so that was something i learnt, well after 2 hours and tbh i was getting very bored the sessions finished. We went to the cafe for a cuppa and a chat about the session it was very good as i now know what im looking out for on labels, i have also found out i like prawns lol i tryed one on the bus on the way home as she took me round the shop afterwards and got me my lunch lol.

well thats all folks.

Course is now over last session today was complications r.e neuropathy, strokes angina etc the most informative of all the sessions i thought, we then played a game called are you an x-pert we got in groups of 2 rolled a dice it landed on a number and we would get general questions to do with diabetes it was good, then at the end of the session we all got our certificates which was reeally nice, i also picked up loads on leaflets along the way all very useful and got myself an ID card off the nice lady for 50p lol.

Anyway all in all a very worth while course and where possible id certainly reccommend to any type 2 newly diagnosed or not.

Thanks for all the info Steff
I enjoyed reading this thread & hope i enjoy mine as much as you enjoyed yours.
Still awaitin for my appt dates.

Sounds like it was a good course there Steff, I think the fact it's spread out over the weeks you probably take more in, as apposed to an intense 4 days on the trot that I think a few places do. Hope the complications bit didn't put a downer on it.

Cheers for spreading this hopefully like you say it will encourage others to go on a course!

I hope so Rossi , and yes i think your right doing it once a week it kind of gives you time to digest all you have learnt in the session instead of trying to take it all in on consecutive days.

Sounds really good, I'd have loved to do one of these but I assume they dont do them in my area. I'll ask my doc on Thursday.
